A$AP Rocky blows off last minute bid to cut a plea deal in shooting case

A$AP Rocky has made it clear that he is not interested in settling the charges against him before going to trial.

The rapper, who has been accused of shooting a former bandmate, A$AP Relli, is scheduled to face trial starting on January 21.

Despite the potential for a plea deal, discussions between the defense team and prosecutors have not led to any agreement.

The trial, which is expected to last several weeks, will see Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, defend himself against two felony charges of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

If convicted, he could face up to 24 years in prison.

In a readiness hearing held on January 17, attorneys from both sides met privately in the chambers of Judge Mark Arnold to discuss the possibility of a settlement.

However, no formal offer was made, and it appears that the rapper remains firm in his stance.

Rocky’s defense attorney, Joe Tacopina, spoke out after the meeting, explaining that his client is not willing to accept a plea deal. “He did not commit a crime,” Tacopina stated, adding that the prosecution’s case was “fundamentally weak.” Tacopina pointed to the fact that police had conducted a thorough search at the scene, but no shell casings were found, casting doubt on the shooting allegations. The defense team has also challenged the evidence, including surveillance footage and testimony from A$AP Relli, claiming that the video and witness accounts are inconclusive.

A$AP Relli, whose real name is Terell Ephron, claims that Rocky pulled out a gun during a confrontation in Hollywood in November 2021. According to Ephron, Rocky pointed the gun at him, threatened to kill him, and then fired the weapon twice, injuring Ephron’s hand. In addition to the criminal charges, Ephron has filed a separate civil lawsuit for assault and battery, seeking damages for the injuries he sustained during the incident.

The altercation took place following a dispute between the two former friends, who had both been members of the A$AP Mob collective. Ephron has said that the confrontation was heated, and he feared for his life when Rocky allegedly pointed the gun at him. In his civil suit, Ephron claims that the rapper’s actions caused him significant physical and emotional distress, requiring medical attention for his injuries.

While the criminal trial proceeds, Rocky’s legal team is also dealing with a defamation lawsuit filed by Ephron. The lawsuit claims that Rocky and Tacopina made defamatory statements about Ephron in an attempt to discredit him. The rapper’s defense team has dismissed the lawsuit as a “publicity stunt” and requested that the court put the case on hold until the criminal trial concludes.

In the midst of the legal proceedings, there has been speculation about whether Rocky’s girlfriend, Rihanna, will attend the trial to support him. Tacopina, however, was unsure if Rihanna would be present, though the judge had previously invited her to attend. The couple, who share two young children, were seen together in New York City just days before the trial was set to begin. Rihanna has yet to comment publicly on the situation.

As the trial approaches, both the prosecution and defense are preparing for what could be a lengthy legal battle. If Rocky is convicted, the consequences could be significant, affecting not only his career but also his high-profile role in the fashion world.

He is scheduled to co-host the prestigious Met Gala in May, alongside other influential figures like LeBron James, Pharrell Williams, and Lewis Hamilton. Should the jury find him guilty, it is unclear whether he will be able to fulfill his role at the event, which could have a ripple effect on the fashion and entertainment industries.

Rocky’s legal team is confident in their defense and has stated that they will continue to fight the charges vigorously. Whether the rapper will testify at trial remains to be seen, but Tacopina indicated that he is eager to tell his side of the story. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining the outcome of this high-stakes case, with both sides gearing up for what is expected to be a contentious trial.
