The first episode of *The View* after Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration was filled with strong reactions and pointed commentary from the show’s hosts, 

who didn’t hold back in their criticism of the former president and his return to the White House. 

The hosts — Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farah Griffin — wasted no time dissecting the events surrounding the inauguration 

and Trump’s speech, with each offering their own perspective on his actions and rhetoric.

Behar opened the segment with her trademark wit, asking, “Did something happen yesterday?” 

to which Navarro responded, “Yes, it was Martin Luther King Day!” 

This exchange set the tone for the discussion, with the hosts exploring the irony and hypocrisy of Trump’s inauguration occurring on the same day the nation was meant to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The group then watched part of Trump’s speech, during which the former president declared himself a “peacemaker and unifier.” The studio audience laughed, and Behar admitted she tuned in for the speech, admitting, “I have a certain masochistic streak in me.” She was critical of Trump’s characterization of himself as a unifier, pointing out that his policies, particularly around immigration, seemed to do the opposite by “ripping families apart” and punishing those who didn’t align with his views.

Haines echoed Behar’s disappointment, particularly over Trump’s tone and his failure to acknowledge the previous administration in a meaningful way. “It had this God-like complex without any Jesus qualities,” Haines remarked, referring to the martyr-like quality she saw in Trump’s speech. “I was really disappointed that there wasn’t one kind thing to say about the outgoing administration,” she continued, calling out the absence of even a small gesture of civility despite Trump spending the morning with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Sunny Hostin, meanwhile, explained that she chose to “protect my peace” by not watching the inauguration, instead spending the day volunteering in Harlem. She was more focused on what she saw as the hypocrisy of Trump’s inauguration on MLK Jr. Day, especially given his stance on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). “Martin Luther King not only wanted racial equality, he wanted economic equality,” Hostin pointed out, emphasizing that King had advocated for reparations for Black Americans. Hostin was critical of Trump’s actions, calling him a “legacy hire” and pointing out that his rise to the presidency had little to do with merit.

Alyssa Farah Griffin, the show’s conservative voice, offered a different perspective. She urged her colleagues and other critics of Trump to “retire the phrase ‘Normalizing Donald Trump,'” arguing that he had already been normalized in American politics. “Whether you like it or not, 75 million people voted for him,” she noted, acknowledging that Trump was as much a part of American history as any two-term president. Griffin also took aim at the Democratic Party, urging them to take responsibility for their failures over the past four years and learn from Trump’s political success.

Ana Navarro, who was in Guatemala for a funeral during the inauguration, shared that she had avoided watching the event but had read parts of Trump’s speech. She offered a strong critique of Trump’s claims to be a “peacemaker” and questioned his foreign policy rhetoric, especially his comments about Panama. “He calls himself a peacemaker, he wants to invade Panama. People, Panama is our ally,” she said, underscoring her concerns about Trump’s unpredictability without the necessary checks in place. Navarro warned Democrats to “get out of your funk” and prepare for the next political battle.

The conversation then turned to Trump’s controversial pardoning of January 6 rioters, which the hosts did not shy away from discussing. Haines called it “the biggest middle finger he could give the entire country,” while Griffin labeled it “dangerous” and “reckless.” The hosts also discussed President Biden’s pardons, with Griffin criticizing them as setting a “dangerous precedent.” However, Navarro clarified that Biden’s pardons were for individuals who had not committed crimes, contrasting them with Trump’s pardons for those already incarcerated.
