Sir Elton John’s Brutal Last Days: Ailing ‘Rocket Man’ Singer, 77, Tells How He Has ‘New Respect for the Blind’ After Being Robbed of His Sight — And Why He Can’t Bear to Listen to His Own Music

Sir Elton John is opening up about the challenges that come with aging, particularly the toll his vision has taken on him in recent years.

The iconic musician, known for his chart-topping hits and extravagant persona, has been dealing with waning eyesight,

which has given him a fresh perspective on life and those who live with sight impairments.

During a recent interview, the six-time Grammy winner shared how his declining vision has affected his outlook.

“I’ve got bad eyesight at the moment,” John confessed. Despite this, he remains determined to stay optimistic.

“There have been days where I’ve been miserable, but then I think about how lucky I am,” he said, acknowledging the difficulties that come with the condition.

John also expressed newfound respect for people who are completely blind or have severe sight impairments, especially those he stays in touch with.

John’s openness about his health struggles reflects his unyielding optimism, which has been a hallmark of his life and career. “I’m an optimist permanently,” he continued. Reflecting on his past challenges, he noted, “I’ve beaten addiction, I’ve beaten health issues, and I can pick myself up and dust myself off.” His words serve as a reminder that, despite the setbacks he’s faced, he remains a fighter.

While dealing with his eyesight challenges, John has also been grappling with a shift in his approach to his music career. The legendary musician has announced that he no longer wants to be remembered primarily for his musical achievements but rather for his personal life—specifically his roles as a husband and father.

During an interview on BBC Radio 2’s *The Scott Mills Breakfast Show* on February 7, John revealed, “I wouldn’t go and put my old music on.” Although he admitted that he recently revisited some of his older work to approve a live album, John surprised himself by enjoying the experience. “I had to listen to that, but actually I really enjoyed it, and I was quite surprised how good it was,” he shared.

John also took the opportunity to reflect on his prolific career, particularly the music he created during the 1970s. “The music we made from 1970-1975 was so good!” he said, expressing pride in the work he and his band accomplished during that time. Despite not regularly listening to his own catalog, John noted that the body of work from that era is one he holds in high regard, with albums and singles that have stood the test of time.

In addition to these reflections, John was recently named TIME Magazine’s Icon of the Year, an accolade that led him to reflect deeply on his life’s work. The honor came shortly after the release of the 2024 Disney+ documentary *Elton John: Never Too Late*, which offered a comprehensive look back at his incredible career. “What I was most surprised about is that the music we made from 1970-1975 was so good!” he said, emphasizing the rich musical output during his early years in the industry.

However, even with his admiration for his past work, John admitted that revisiting his history isn’t always easy. He clarified, “I never watch anything about me because I just don’t like to look at myself very often. I’m not one to bask in my success.” Despite this, he described the experience of reflecting on his career in the documentary as a “tense” but ultimately rewarding one. “I thought it really nailed what I thought my career had been and how it’s turned out to be,” he remarked, noting that the documentary captured the essence of his journey. “That was the whole point of it, you know – it’s never too late.”

Sir Elton John’s candidness about his aging process, struggles with his eyesight, and evolving perspective on his musical legacy provide a rare glimpse into the mindset of one of music’s most enduring stars. His reflections highlight his resilience in the face of personal challenges and his ability to appreciate the achievements of his past while embracing the future. With his positive outlook and focus on the importance of family, it’s clear that John is ready for the next chapter, whatever it may bring.
