Comedian Chris McCausland, who made history as the first blind contestant to win “Strictly Come Dancing” in 2024, 

has candidly discussed the intense challenges he faced during the competition. 

Partnered with professional dancer Dianne Buswell, McCausland’s journey to the Glitterball Trophy was marked by grueling rehearsals and physical exhaustion.

Reflecting on the demanding schedule, McCausland revealed, “Towards the end, it was 15 hours a day; I was broken. I mean, it was relentless. 

Physically I ached. I had lost weight. I’m probably fitter than I’ve been in ages, but I was held together with tape at the end.” 

The comedian acknowledged the mental fortitude required to endure such a rigorous routine, 

noting that the differing objectives between celebrities and professional dancers can sometimes lead to tension. He explained, “Some people’s objective might be to survive another week, whereas from the dancers’ point of view, the objective is to succeed … .” 

Despite the physical and emotional toll, McCausland’s participation in “Strictly” significantly elevated his career. Following his win, he added over a hundred dates to his stand-up tour, “Yonks!”, to meet the heightened demand. On some days, he performs his show back-to-back three times, a feat he considers manageable compared to the strenuous dance rehearsals. He remarked, “That’s not eight hours of … .” 

McCausland’s journey on “Strictly” not only showcased his resilience but also highlighted the importance of representation. He emphasized, “Making people forget about disability … .” 

His experience on the show also led to personal growth, making him more open to exploring emotions and vulnerability. He shared, “I’ve always been very closed … —’Pull your pants up and get … .”
