BBC Bargain Hunt’s Charles Hanson arrives at court to face trial for ‘assaulting wife’

Television auctioneer Charles Hanson has arrived at Derby Crown Court

as he prepares to stand trial over allegations of assault and coercive control involving his estranged wife, Rebecca Hanson.

The 45-year-old Bargain Hunt star, who was arrested in June 2023, faces multiple charges related to incidents spanning nearly a decade.

The trial is expected to last between seven and ten days.

Allegations Against Charles Hanson

Hanson, best known for his appearances on BBC’s Bargain Hunt, has been accused of engaging in controlling and coercive behavior between May 2015 and June 2023.

Additionally, he faces charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) between May 13 and 17, 2020.

Derbyshire Police confirmed his arrest in June last year, following reports of a domestic incident at an address in Church Road, Quarndon. A statement from the force at the time said:

“The force was called to reports of a domestic incident at an address in Church Road, Quarndon, in June. A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of assault and was released on police bail while enquiries continued.”

Hanson was later officially charged on December 14, 2023, with a total of seven offences. These included one count of ABH, two counts of assault by beating, and one charge of controlling and coercive behaviour.

Despite the accusations, Hanson has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The auctioneer has maintained his stance, stating, “I will be cooperating fully with the investigation and legal process.”

Legal Proceedings and Trial Timeline

As the case unfolds at Derby Crown Court, Hanson faces a lengthy trial that could last up to ten days. The court proceedings will determine whether the claims against him are substantiated, with both sides expected to present evidence and witness testimonies.

Given the serious nature of the allegations, the case has attracted widespread media attention. The legal definition of coercive control includes patterns of intimidation, threats, and other abusive behaviours designed to control or manipulate a partner over an extended period. If convicted, Hanson could face a significant prison sentence under UK law.

Charles Hanson’s Career and Public Profile

Before his legal troubles, Charles Hanson was a well-respected figure in the world of antiques and television auctioneering. He began his career as a qualified surveyor in 1999 and quickly made a name for himself when he joined Christie’s ceramics and glass department.

In 2002, he gained national recognition as one of the youngest experts on Bargain Hunt at just 25 years old. His expertise and engaging on-screen presence led to further roles on BBC’s Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip.

By 2005, Hanson had established his own auction house near Etwall, Derbyshire, expanding his business with the launch of Hansons London in 2018. Over the years, he became a household name in the antiques world, known for his charismatic personality and deep knowledge of historical artifacts.

What Happens Next?

As the trial continues, Hanson’s legal team is expected to mount a robust defense against the allegations. The case will be closely followed, given his high-profile career and reputation in the industry.

For now, the outcome remains uncertain. If found guilty, Hanson could face serious consequences, including potential jail time and reputational damage that could impact his future in television and auctioneering. If acquitted, he will likely seek to restore his public image and return to his career.

The trial will shed light on the details of the case, and the legal proceedings will determine the next chapter for the Bargain Hunt star.
