Since Anne Hathaway was born in 1982 and Nicholas Galitzine was born in 1994, their age gap is 12 years.
This is a slightly smaller difference than their characters in The Idea of You, as Solène is 40 years old while Hayes Campbell is 24 at the film’s beginning, resulting in a 16-year age gap.
By the end of The Idea of You, Solène is 45, while Hayes is 29, lining up with Galitzine’s real age.
Galitzine is still at the age where actors commonly play younger roles, though, as he recently portrayed a teenager in the 2023 comedy Bottoms.
While the actors’ age gap in real life differs from their characters in The Idea of You,
Solène and Hayes’ age difference in Anne Hathaway’s 2024 rom-com is inconsistent with the original text.
In Robinne Lee’s book, Solène is roughly the same age, as she is 39 rather than 40. So, the difference between Hathaway’s character’s age in the novel and the movie isn’t large.
However, the film aged Hayes significantly, as Hayes in the book is only 20, resulting in a 19-year age gap between him and Solène. The producers of The Idea of You likely bumped up Hayes’ age in the Amazon movie to reduce controversy or better match Galitzine’s real age. But since The Idea of You centers around the dangerous taboos of a romance between an older woman and a younger man, making Hayes older seems to go against the film’s message.
