ABC’s Deborah Roberts delivers devastating news: ‘Our hearts are collectively broken’

Deborah Roberts, the esteemed journalist and television personality, has been met with an outpouring of love and condolences after revealing heartbreaking news about her family.

In a deeply emotional post shared on social media,

Deborah expressed the profound sorrow she and her loved ones are experiencing following the passing of her beloved older brother, Jackie.

A Devastating Loss

The journalist, who is widely recognized for her work on ABC News and as the wife of Today show’s Al Roker, took to Instagram to share a touching tribute to Jackie.

Accompanied by cherished family photos, Deborah described her brother as a “mighty oak” who had been a source of strength and guidance in their family.

“Our hearts are collectively broken,” she wrote, emphasizing the irreplaceable role Jackie played as the family patriarch. With their parents no longer with them, he had become the cornerstone of their family, offering unwavering support and love to his younger siblings.

A Life of Service and Love

Deborah painted a heartfelt picture of her brother, describing him as a devoted father, a caring brother, and a loyal friend. He also took great pride in his time serving in the military, a commitment that further demonstrated his dedication to others. His values of integrity, kindness, and perseverance left a lasting impression on those around him.

As one of five sisters, Deborah shared that Jackie was more than just an older brother—he was a guiding force in their lives. His wisdom and presence shaped their childhood and continued to influence them well into adulthood. His passing has left an undeniable void, but his legacy remains in the memories and lessons he imparted.

Unwavering Support from Loved Ones

Following Deborah’s announcement, friends, colleagues, and fans flooded her social media with messages of sympathy and encouragement. Among them was fellow television personality Lara Spencer, who expressed her condolences, saying, “Oh no Deb. So, so sorry.” CNN’s Alina Cho also sent words of comfort, writing, “Oh, Deb… I’m so very sorry… sending you all my love.”

The outpouring of support highlights the deep respect and admiration Deborah has earned throughout her career. Known not only for her professionalism but also for her warmth and authenticity, she has formed close bonds with many in the media industry and beyond.

A History of Heartbreak

This tragic loss comes just over a year after Deborah lost her eldest sister, Annette, to dementia in July 2022. Though she did not disclose the cause of Jackie’s passing, the heartbreak of losing yet another sibling has undoubtedly been overwhelming for her and her family.

Despite these painful losses, Deborah has often reflected on the strong foundation her siblings provided throughout her life. She previously shared nostalgic family photos, reminiscing about the joy and chaos of growing up in a large household. She credited her siblings with shaping her into the person she is today, and those memories remain a source of comfort during these difficult times.

Cherishing Family Moments

Beyond her immediate family, Deborah has also built a beautiful life with her husband, Al Roker. Together, they have raised three children—Nick and Leila, as well as Courtney, Al’s daughter from a previous marriage. Their strong family bond has been evident over the years, and they continue to celebrate milestones together.

Most recently, the family had a joyous occasion to cherish, as Deborah and Al celebrated the engagement of their daughter, Leila. Despite the sorrow of losing her brother, Deborah finds solace in the love and unity of her family, which remains her greatest strength.

Honoring Jackie’s Memory

As she grieves this devastating loss, Deborah is finding comfort in the lasting impact her brother had on everyone around him. She ended her heartfelt tribute by addressing her sisters, Jacqueline, Vicky, Pamela, and Doris, acknowledging their shared grief while also holding onto the unforgettable memories they created with Jackie.

“What a loss for us,” she wrote. “But what a life of purpose and example. We miss you so much, dear Jackie.”

While his absence will be deeply felt, the love he instilled in his family will continue to shine through. Deborah’s touching words remind everyone of the importance of cherishing loved ones and holding onto the memories that define a lifetime.
