Alison Hammond and Josie Gibson break down in tears on This Morning boss Martin Frizzell’s last day as he quits to spend more time with Alzheimer’s-hit wife Fiona Phillips

It was an emotional moment on This Morning as co-presenters Alison Hammond and Josie Gibson broke down in tears, bidding farewell to their beloved boss, Martin Frizzell.

After a decade at the helm of the popular daytime show, Frizzell stepped down to dedicate more time to his wife, Fiona Phillips, who has been battling Alzheimer’s disease.

As the episode neared its end, Hammond and Gibson invited Frizzell to join them on the famous This Morning sofa for a heartfelt tribute.

Overcome with emotion, the two presenters expressed their deep gratitude for his unwavering support and the profound impact he had on their careers.

A Moving Farewell

Alison Hammond, known for her infectious energy, was visibly emotional as she addressed Frizzell.

“He’s the one who took a chance on us, transforming mine and Josie’s careers,” she said. “It’s an incredible opportunity, and we just want to say thank you very much. We love you.”

Gibson echoed her co-host’s sentiments, holding back tears as she expressed her appreciation. “I just want to say, thank you so much because you believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself. You grew me as a presenter, and I just can’t thank you enough.”

Frizzell, touched by the outpouring of affection, responded with humility. “If you were rubbish, you wouldn’t be on telly. You’re very good. It has been a great ride and a fantastic time.”

Martin Frizzell’s Legacy on This Morning

Frizzell’s departure marks the end of an era for the beloved ITV program. Having served as the show’s editor for ten years, he played a pivotal role in shaping its success. Under his leadership, This Morning tackled pressing social issues, including mental health awareness, menopause education, and cancer prevention. His work behind the scenes helped turn the show into an essential part of the British television landscape.

However, his tenure was not without challenges. The show weathered several controversies, including the highly publicized scandal involving former presenter Phillip Schofield. Despite the turbulence, Frizzell remained steadfast in steering the program forward, ensuring its continued success and relevance.

A Heartfelt Decision

In November, Frizzell announced his decision to step down, citing his need to prioritize family. His wife, Fiona Phillips, a respected journalist and former GMTV presenter, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2022. The heartbreaking news prompted Frizzell to re-evaluate his commitments, ultimately deciding to dedicate his time to caring for her.

“Next year, I’m expecting my family priorities to change, so I need to free up time for them,” Frizzell stated in his announcement. “I love my team at This Morning and will miss them and the thrill of live telly, but it’s an always-on, 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week commitment, and I won’t be able to do both.”

Phillips, who has been open about her Alzheimer’s journey, is set to release a book titled Remember in July. In the memoir, she aims to provide insight into her experience with the disease, hoping to offer comfort to others navigating similar challenges. “I hope this book can show people a little about what it is like to live with Alzheimer’s—how frightening and confusing it is, but also how much life can still bring joy and be valued,” Phillips shared.

The Future of This Morning

With Frizzell stepping away, ITV has appointed Vivek Sharma as his successor. Sharma, who will take over as the show’s editor in March, expressed his excitement about leading the program into a new era.

“Having grown up watching the show, it’s an incredible privilege and honor to take on the role of Editor of This Morning,” Sharma stated. “Over the last 37 years, the show has become a national institution and has been responsible for some of the most memorable moments on television. The team on and off camera is world-class, and I can’t wait to work alongside them in my new role as we shape the future of this iconic brand.”

As the farewell segment concluded, Frizzell was given control of the show’s Friday jukebox, choosing Shania Twain’s 1997 hit Man! I Feel Like A Woman!—a fitting, celebratory send-off that had the studio buzzing with energy.

A Lasting Impact

Frizzell’s departure marks a poignant moment for This Morning. His leadership has left an indelible mark on the show, fostering an environment where presenters like Hammond and Gibson could flourish. His dedication to both the program and the causes it championed has resonated deeply with colleagues and viewers alike.

While This Morning looks ahead to a new chapter under Sharma’s guidance, Frizzell’s contributions will not be forgotten. For now, he leaves behind a legacy of journalistic excellence and heartfelt television, embarking on a new journey devoted to his family and the love of his life, Fiona Phillips.
