Alison Hammond, one of the UK’s most beloved TV personalities, is gearing up to celebrate her 50th birthday on February 5th,
which coincidentally is also the 20th birthday of her son, Aidan.
Known for her infectious laughter and larger-than-life personality,
Alison is taking a more relaxed approach to this milestone year, opting to “chill out” instead of hosting an extravagant party.
The TV presenter, who’s known for bringing joy to *This Morning*, is looking forward to spending quality time with her loved ones.
“Honestly, it just feels like another year,” she says with her trademark breeziness.
“I had the big bash when I turned 48 – and Aidan turned 18 – and it was wonderful. But it took a lot of preparation. I’m not in the mood this year! I just want to relax.”
As the mother-son duo takes on their first TV project together, *Florida Unpacked*, a travelogue where they explore Florida’s attractions on a budget, Alison can’t help but reflect on how quickly the years have passed. “What’s incredible is how quickly the time goes,” she admits. “I’d urge people to enjoy their lives, spend time with loved ones, and be present.”
Aidan, now 20, has grown into a well-rounded young man, a source of immense pride for Alison. She fondly remembers him as the little boy who used to visit *This Morning* for occasional fashion segments. “I’ve been with this person all his life,” she says, her Brummie accent adding warmth to her words. “It’s just lovely that he’s turned out to be a kind, well-rounded young man. I’m so proud.”
For Aidan, it’s his mum’s outlook on life that has made the most significant impact on him. “‘Be happy,’ she says. ‘If you’re not, what’s the point?’” he reflects. “I was in a very good job, but I wasn’t happy. I told Mum what I really wanted was to DJ, and she said, ‘Do that, then.’”
Alison’s unwavering support has helped Aidan pursue his passion for DJing, even though the career shift was a significant decision. “You don’t have to go 100 miles an hour,” she says, reflecting on what she’s learned from Aidan’s more patient approach to life. “He’s taught me to slow down. You don’t have to rush everything, and that’s something I’ve learned from him.”
As Aidan carves out his place in the music industry, Alison, with her vast experience in showbiz, has passed on valuable advice. “Just be authentically true to yourself,” she encourages. “People are going to see through you if you’re not. And if you don’t know something – be honest! People will respect that more than you faking it.”
Though Alison is a seasoned TV pro, she still admires her son’s potential. “I feel like a groupie,” she admits with a laugh. “I’m such an embarrassing fan. I’d go to every gig he does, personally, but I have to play it cool and let him do his thing.”
Their new show, *Florida Unpacked*, offers a glimpse into their dynamic. The pair visited various Florida hotspots, from salsa dancing in Miami to parasailing in the Florida Keys. For Aidan, the highlight of the trip was the Everglades, where he found peace and tranquility amidst nature. “Being on an airboat, seeing alligators pop up at night… It was so peaceful,” he recalls. Alison adds, “Aidan’s a techy boy – he likes his phone and his games. But with that taken away, it was just us, in the middle of nature. It was actually a really special, bonding time.”
While their road trip in Florida was filled with laughter, it wasn’t without its moments of tension. Alison, who did all the driving, jokes that Aidan often tried to take over the wheel. “Aidan is a driver, and so thinks he knows best when it comes to driving and tries to take over,” she laughs. “The truth is he needs to listen to mum sometimes!”
Throughout the trip, their shared sense of humor was evident. “Aidan’s the one person who can make me full-on belly laugh,” Alison says. “If I’m in a bad mood, he’s the only person who can take me out of it instantly.” Aidan adds, “We just take the mick out of each other constantly. It’s our thing.”
Alison believes in the healing power of laughter, recalling the heartfelt messages she receives from fans who share how her humor has helped them through difficult times. “Laughter is a beautiful medicine,” she says. “If something I’ve said or done has taken a person out of darkness, that’s so important to me.”
As Alison prepares for her milestone birthday, she remains focused on what brings her joy. “I want to rest more, and have more holidays this year,” she shares. “I’ve achieved everything I wanted to, really – maybe hosting Comic Relief one day would be good… But honestly? I’m happy with where I am in life.”
