Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were once considered one of the most popular couples in Hollywood. Naturally, fans were eager to witness their on-screen chemistry as well. However, making this happen proved to be more challenging than anticipated due to the need for numerous scheduling adjustments.
Their first collaboration came with the release of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” in 2005. At that time, Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston, but their relationship started to crumble after the movie hit theaters. Interestingly, there was a peculiar twist to the story as the film’s director initially intended to replace Jolie with one of Pitt’s ex-partners.
One of those exes happened to be Gwyneth Paltrow, another Oscar winner. The reasons behind this potential switch were certainly unconventional.

Doug Liman wanted to switch Angelina Jolie with Gwyneth Paltrow
Doug Liman, the director of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” had his own vision for the film that didn’t quite align with Jolie in the role of Mrs. Smith. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Liman confessed that he considered casting Pitt’s ex-fiancée, Gwyneth Paltrow, to play his on-screen wife.

However, Liman’s producers immediately put a stop to this idea. They believed that it would be unfair to put Pitt in a situation where he would have to revisit past relationship issues, even if he were open to the idea. It was deemed too much of a “mad scientist” experiment.
Consequently, the plan was discarded. Paltrow wasn’t the only ex of Brad Pitt’s being considered for the role, as names like Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, and Catherine Zeta-Jones were also mentioned during that time, according to Doug Liman. However, Angelina Jolie ultimately remained the unbeatable choice.

Angelina Jolie and Doug Liman often clashed during the filming of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” Jolie had already been married twice before working on the movie, which meant she had her own ideas and perspectives about certain scenes and the story that didn’t always align with the director’s vision. These differences inevitably led to arguments, some of which were reportedly so intense that Liman refused to direct certain scenes involving Jolie.
As a result, Brad Pitt took on the role of directing those specific sequences. However, it appears that they managed to resolve their conflicts. Jolie once commented on the topic, stating that everyone has their own opinion, and healthy debates are part of the process. Jolie and Pitt also expressed their desire to revisit their roles in a potential sequel. They even explored the idea with others, but since no original concept materialized, the plan was ultimately shelved. Jolie also acknowledged that being a real-life couple limits the willingness to portray certain things on screen.

Consequently, their dream of reuniting on screen became increasingly unlikely. However, they did eventually come together to portray the struggling marriage of Vanessa and Roland in the 2015 film “By the Sea.”
Strangely enough, that was their last on-screen collaboration, and they eventually separated in 2016. While both individuals seem to be thriving individually, it seems highly improbable that fans will ever witness them sharing the screen again. Despite their individual successes, the days of seeing Jolie and Pitt together in a movie appear to be over.
