Sandra Bullock’s portrayal of space engineer Ryan Stone in Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity left both Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson heartbroken, as they had hoped to land the coveted role in the $723 million-grossing film.

Scarlett Johansson, known for her versatile performances, desired to play the lead character in Gravity. However, the role ultimately went to Sandra Bullock. Gravity, released in 2013, became a massive success both commercially and critically, grossing over $723.2 million worldwide and receiving ten Oscar nominations, winning seven, including Best Director and Best Visual Effects.

The film was highly sought after, and many actors had dreams of playing the lead. George Clooney and Ed Harris also starred in the movie.

Johansson shared her desire to be a part of Iron Man 2, and she ultimately landed the role of Black Widow, which expanded into multiple movies before her character’s demise in Avengers: Endgame.

On the other hand, Angelina Jolie was initially considered for the lead role in Gravity, along with Robert Downey Jr. However, Jolie had to let go of the opportunity due to conflicts with her directorial project, Unbroken. Reports indicate that Jolie fired her manager over losing the role, as she saw Gravity as another significant project that could enhance her resume. Ultimately, Sandra Bullock was cast in the film and received an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the lone survivor in space.

Gravity, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, can be streamed on HBO Max and is available for rental or purchase on platforms like Google Play and Amazon Instant Video. The film’s success and the intense competition for the lead role left both Jolie and Johansson longing for the opportunity that ultimately went to Sandra Bullock.
