She joins other celebrities such as Emma Watson and Angelina Jolie.
Anne Hathaway has long been a supporter of women’s rights and her powerful advocacy has now earned her the attention of U.N.
Women, the department of the U.N. dedicated to gender equality.
Hathaway is no stranger to gender-related advocacy work.
She previously served as an advocate for the Nike Foundation, during which time she visited Kenya and Ethiopia, raising awareness on child marriage.
Hathaway was also the narrator for the CNN documentary Girl Rising, a film that focuses on the importance of education for young women.
The global goodwill ambassador will continue her streak of gender-based advocacy in her new position, where she will be a voice for gender equality and women’s empowerment
Anne Hathaway’s work with the U.N. will be focused specifically on gender equality in the workplace and the home; advocating for policy change that will aid working mothers internationally. This is likely an area that hits close to home for the actress and advocate who, just last March, welcomed home her baby boy Jonathan. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the executive director for U.N. women, stated, “within moments of meeting Anne I realized that we had found our woman”.
Mlambo-Ngcuka has also declared an interest in fostering better work environments for women, through childcare services and shared parental leave both at corporate and governmental levels. Hathaway’s work with U.N. Women will hopefully bring about the type of tangible change that Mlambo-Ngcuka spoke about and that workingwomen need worldwide.
In a statement about the U.N’s announcement, Anne Hathaway stated, “I feel honored and inspired by this opportunity to aid in advancing gender equality.”.
