Anne Hathaway’s Real Estate – California Suburban Home
Anne Hathaway’s California estate , owned by Anne Hathaway and jewelry designer Adam Shulman, has a fascinating story behind it.
Few people know that Yves Saint Laurent once owned the property until filmmaker Wes Anderson moved in.
The charming, mostly wooden Swiss-style house dates back to at least 1906, and was damaged by fire in 1917 and has since been restored. Anderson and David Bowie are said to have hosted annual New Year’s Eve parties there.
Hathaway and Shulman later fell in love with it and decided to renovate it with AD100 designer Pamela Shamshiri.
“Pam really loved it,” Hathaway said of the collaborative process of rebuilding her historic home, which was previously designed by architects Myron Hunt and Elmer Gray, who also created the Henry and Arabella Huntington mansion in San Marino, now home to the Huntington Library art gallery , along with many other notable Southern California structures.
“Throughout the entire process, her designs feel sophisticated, enchanting, and have a joyful atmosphere,” says Shulman.
Anne Hathaway and Shulman’s estate is described as “love-struck.” The millionaire’s husband said: “We were captivated as soon as we drove up and saw the magnificent panorama unfolding before our eyes.”
“It had the perfect combination of romanticism and beautiful design. Our first impressions told us that this was a place that would be a part of our lives. I could see myself starting a family here,” Hathaway said.
Fairytale architecture served as the basis for Shamshiri’s imaginative, decades-long interiors.
“We sought to create a Swiss chalet that felt like a hunting lodge, a winter retreat,” she says. “We tried to retain the ‘sweet’ details of the house while adding layers of colour, texture and furniture from different eras. In doing so, the house reflects the past – and present – and the generous, warm spirit of Anne and Adam.”
Anne Hathaway’s estate features a spacious music room that was built as a discotheque for young people. The area features floodlights, a grand piano, a sparkling Yves Klein Monogold table, an early 20th century disco ball and plenty of comfortable seating for Hathaway and Shulman’s many friends.
“I totally supported Annie and Adam’s super bold color sense,” Shamshiri recalls of the peach and burgundy color scheme in the foyer and music room , inspired by a favorite Gucci shirt.
The royal yellow gown Rihanna wore at the 2015 Met Gala was used as a reference for some of the gold materials, carpets, and stage in the music room .
The couple are also very pleased with their new home. “When it’s just the two of us and the baby, the house feels very peaceful and quiet, as if it’s embracing us. When there are a lot of people around, it opens up with excitement and joy,” Shulman added.
“We’ve wanted a space like this for a long time. It’s a place where the people we care about can come together, where our musical friends can shine. It’s the beating heart of the house ,” Hathaway explains.
The kitchen is painted in soft shades of baby blue and soft green, leading straight to the lovely breakfast area with its beautiful wallpaper. The space is integrated with architectural elements and modern spruce chairs by Italian designer Carlo de Carli. There is also a long table in the kitchen for everyone to sit and watch the cooking process.
