Anne Hathaway Reveals the Darker Side of Hollywood

When faced with uncomfortable situations, the media feels entitled to hound the celebrities down to humiliate them with more passive-aggressive questions,

drag the curtains down and force a look into their personal lives, and satisfy the public curiosity about what makes these larger-than-life figures so different from the nondescript masses.

It was during one such utterly gross situation that Anne Hathaway first felt the tinge of humiliation and vulnerability. A casting call in the 2000s went very wrong after she was made to kiss 10 actors in a row for a chemistry test after being cast in the leading role.

But while Anne Hathaway felt grossed out by the turn of events, her co-workers were more than happy to glorify her situation, romanticize it, and come off as insensitive in hindsight. In an interview with V Magazine, the Oscar-winner revealed:

“Back in the 2000s—and this did happen to me—it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry.”

Hathaway recalled being told, “We have ten guys coming today and you’re cast.” Realizing the gravity of the questionable situation, she began to grow antsy about what she was tasked with. However, her co-workers replied, “Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?”

Anne Hathaway Learns to Stand Up for Herself

In hindsight, although Anne Hathaway has had her fair share of self-discovery to do, learn to stand up for herself, and validate her own emotions before pleasing others, the Princess Diaries star did encounter a dilemma regarding the questionable chemistry test.

After the insensitive verdict from her co-workers, the actress began to doubt herself and instead found herself thinking:

“Is there something wrong with me? Because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross. I was so young and terribly aware how easy it was to lose everything by being labeled ‘difficult,’ so I just pretended I was excited and got on with it.”

Years later, Anne Hathaway, now surer of her self-esteem and her needs, addresses the incident with grace and elegance. Although it was an unpleasant experience, she acknowledged that the situation was not designed to hurt her in any way:

“It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me. It was just a very different time and now we know better.”
