Marvel fans are currently preparing to welcome the X-Men to the MCU, but it is hard to ignore the demise of the Fox iteration of the franchise,

which came to an end with the heavily criticized Dark Phoenix. One of the stars of that franchise, Michael Fassbender, has been sharing his thoughts on the matter,

suggesting that the time was right for Fox’s X-Men movies to end. Making their big screen debut in 2000, X-Men burst into life with a stunning adaptation that introduced Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine,

Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Halle Berry’s Storm and many more comic book heroes to cinema audiences and set in motion a legacy that is still not quite over after two decades.

Following the release of X-Men 3, Fox switched up the format by delivering a series of prequels, starting with X-Men: First Class.

This iteration included James McAvoy taking over Patrick Stewart’s role as a younger Professor X, and Michael Fassbender taking on the role of Magneto, taking over from Ian McKellan in the original trilogy.

Having subsequently appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past and Dark Phoenix, Fassbender recently touched on his time as part of the franchise during an interview for the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He said of Dark Phoenix:  “You know, I think I had a great run… I thoroughly enjoyed it. By the time Dark Phoenix was over – yeah, it was like… It was lucky, we had a fantastic run.” The production of Dark Phoenix was fraught with issues, as well as claims that the movie was rushed out before Disney completed their merger with Fox and took control of the franchise through Marvel Studios. The reviews and box office result – taking just $252 million on the back of its $200 million budget – seemed to support the belief that the franchise would have perhaps been better off without its final installment.  Which Former X-Men Stars Will Return in the MCU? In 2024 there is only one Marvel Cinematic Universe movie coming to cinemas, and that is Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s joint MCU debut in Deadpool 3. The movie has already been rumored to feature a number of Fox universe characters, but exactly which ones is something that we will not find out until the movie hits theaters on July 26.

In the last few weeks, filming on the movie resumed following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strikes, and leaked set images have revealed several potential cameo appearances from original X-Men stars. However, various internet whispers have hinted that the likes of Halle Berry and James Marsden could be reprising their roles, along with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X (teased by the actor himself) and Kelsey Grammer as Beast (following his return in The Marvels’ post-credits scene).

Fans have already been stoked at the idea of Deadpool 3 finally delivering a true multiverse experience, and the inclusion of many X-Men variants is something that could be an integral part of the movie’s plot.
