Ben Shephard reveals wife Annie got ‘really upset’ after son’s achievement

Television presenter Ben Shephard recently opened up about a heartfelt family moment that many parents can relate to.

During a discussion on This Morning, Ben revealed that his wife, Annie,

was deeply concerned when their eldest son, Sam, asked to take his younger brother, Jack, for a drive after passing his driving test.

The conversation arose as Ben and co-host Cat Deeley addressed the AA’s proposal to ban newly licensed drivers under 21 from carrying passengers of a similar age.

Reflecting on his own family’s experience, Ben shared how his wife reacted emotionally to the idea of their two sons being in the car together.

“Sam passed and he said, ‘I want to take Jack out,’” Ben explained. “Sam’s 18, and Jack was 16 at the time.

I thought it was a great idea and said, ‘Yeah, go for it.’ But Annie got really upset and wasn’t sure about it.”

Ben, a devoted father of two, reassured Annie by reminding her of her own driving experience. “I asked her, ‘Who was the first person you took for a drive when you passed your test?’ It was her brother, who was exactly the same age as Jack. She loved that moment, so I told her that Sam should be able to experience it too.”

While acknowledging Annie’s concerns, Ben emphasized the importance of allowing young drivers to celebrate their milestone moments. “What we had to say to Sam was, ‘Be careful. It’s your first time driving with a passenger, so enjoy the moment, but also remember that Jack is precious cargo. You’re both very important.’”

His co-host, Cat Deeley, supported the sentiment, calling it a “rite of passage.” She added, “It’s the freedom you get when you first pass your test. That’s a huge moment.”

A Close-Knit Family

Ben and Annie, who have been married since 2004, are proud parents to Sam and Jack, born in 2005 and 2007 respectively. The couple has navigated the journey of parenthood together, supporting their sons through various life milestones.

In September, Ben shared another emotional experience—watching his eldest son leave home for university. Speaking to Lorraine host Lorraine Kelly, he admitted, “He actually starts lectures today. He’s had his freshers’ week, and it was all very emotional.”

A touching photo of Sam with his mother captured the bittersweet moment. “She handled it better than I did,” Ben confessed. “I was really, really emotional about it.” He added that Sam, despite his newfound independence, still relied on his parents for advice. “He Facetimed us at 7:30 this morning, asking his mum how to do his washing. Annie was thrilled—she’s still needed!”

A Love That Has Stood the Test of Time

Ben and Annie’s relationship dates back to their university days at The University of Birmingham. In a previous interview with Kate Thornton on White Wine Question Time, Ben reflected on their enduring bond. “We met at university—so you knew Annie when I was just getting into television. I was just a puppy when it came to broadcasting,” he said.

Through the highs and lows of his career, Annie has remained a steadfast partner. “She has been through all of this with me, and somehow, she’s still putting up with me. To this day, I can’t quite believe it,” Ben remarked.

Parenting Through Life’s Transitions

As Ben and Annie navigate the different stages of their sons’ lives, they continue to cherish these significant moments—whether it’s their child’s first drive, heading off to university, or simply needing guidance on everyday tasks.

Their story resonates with many parents who experience a mix of excitement and apprehension as their children grow. While milestones like passing a driving test or moving away for school can be nerve-wracking, they are also invaluable moments of growth and independence.

For Ben and Annie, supporting their sons while allowing them to embrace new responsibilities is a delicate balance—but one they are handling with love, humor, and plenty of cherished memories along the way.
