British singer Lily Allen has hit out at Grammy winner Beyoncé as she labeled the singer’s move into country music as ‘calculated’.
On her new album, Beyoncé covered the hit country song Jolene and it even had a small cameo from singer Dolly Parton who sang the original in 1973.
Lily, who discussed the new album Cowboy Carter on her podcast ‘Miss Me?’, admitted she’s only heard a couple of the songs.
However she did label Beyoncé’s decision to cover Dolly Parton’s hit Jolene as ‘”very weird”.
Speaking alongside pal Miquita Oliver, Lily commented: “It’s quite an interesting thing to do when you’re trying to tackle a new genre.
And you just choose the biggest song in that genre to cover.”
She added: “I mean, you do you, Beyoncé. And she literally is doing her — or is she doing Dolly?” In a later part of the discussion, the Cowboy Carter album is highlighted as “forcing itself to be part of its own narrative” with Lily then replying that she sees the entire thing as “calculated.”
Lily then referenced Jay-Z publicly calling out the Grammys for never giving Beyoncé the Album of the Year award, where she pointed out that Beyoncé was wearing a cowboy hat hinting at the future country music move. She explained: “When Jay-Z got up and said that thing, that was part of this campaign. It was before the album had come out or even been announced, and she was wearing the blonde wig and a cowboy hat.” She then added: “It’s a bit about challenging these institutions that have thus far rejected Beyoncé as the icon and institution that she is of herself. Now she’s the most played woman on country radio.”
Beyoncé has previously addressed the backlash against her latest country inspired album which took five years to make. Writing on Instagram, she told fans: “This album has been over five years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t.”
She added: “Because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive. It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history.”
Earlier this month Beyoncé snubbed fans after she failed to appear at the CMT Awards in Austin, Texas. The star’s fans believed she would make an appearance following her venture into country music with her new Cowboy Carter album. However, she was nowhere to be seen at the prestigious event at the Moody Center.
