Bob Odenkirk: Ben Stiller Was ‘Ballsy as Hell’ to Exit ‘SNL’

In a recent interview, actor and comedian Bob Odenkirk lauded Ben Stiller’s decision to leave “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) after a brief tenure,

describing the move as “ballsy as hell.” Stiller, who joined SNL as a writer and featured performer in 1989 at the age of 23, departed after only four episodes.

Odenkirk emphasized the courage it took for Stiller to step away from such a prestigious platform, especially early in his career.

**Stiller’s Brief Stint on SNL**

Ben Stiller’s time on SNL was notably short. He became frustrated because all his ideas for taped pieces were rejected for requiring too much lead time,

leading him to quit after four episodes.

**Pursuing a Different Path**

Following his departure from SNL, Stiller channeled his creative energies into projects that aligned more closely with his interests. He created “The Ben Stiller Show,” a sketch comedy series that aired briefly on MTV in 1990 before being picked up by Fox in 1992. The show, though short-lived, was critically acclaimed and showcased Stiller’s penchant for filmed sketches and parodies.

**Odenkirk’s Perspective**

Bob Odenkirk, who worked alongside Stiller on “The Ben Stiller Show,” highlighted the significance of Stiller’s choice to leave SNL. He noted that stepping away from such a renowned institution required a strong conviction in one’s creative vision. Odenkirk’s comments shed light on the challenges artists face when navigating their careers and the importance of making bold decisions to stay true to their artistic goals.

**Reflecting on the Decision**

In retrospect, Stiller’s decision to leave SNL appears to have been a pivotal moment in his career. By pursuing his own projects, he established himself as a versatile talent in the entertainment industry, contributing significantly to both television and film. Odenkirk’s admiration for Stiller’s choice underscores the value of taking risks in the pursuit of creative fulfillment.

In summary, Ben Stiller’s early departure from SNL, as highlighted by Bob Odenkirk, exemplifies the courage required to make unconventional career decisions. This move allowed Stiller to explore his creative passions more fully, ultimately leading to a successful and diverse body of work in comedy and beyond.
