Comedian Chris McCausland, who made history as the first blind contestant to win “Strictly Come Dancing” in 2024, 

has offered insights into the underlying tensions that can arise between celebrities and their professional dance partners on the show. 

Reflecting on his own experience, McCausland highlighted the differing objectives that each party brings to the competition, which can sometimes lead to conflicts.

McCausland explained that while celebrities might aim to survive each week and enjoy the journey, professional dancers are deeply invested in their careers and reputations. 

He stated, “Some people’s objective might be to survive another week, whereas from the dancers’ point of view, 

the objective is to succeed because that’s their profession; that’s what their reputation is based on. I can see that there can be a … .” 

The comedian also touched upon the intense physical and mental demands of the show. He revealed that towards the end of …  rehearsals could last up to 15 hours a day, leaving him feeling “broken” and physically exhausted. He noted, “Physically I ached. … .” 

McCausland acknowledged that the rigorous schedule and high expectations can lead to emotional strain, making it understandable why some participants might struggle. He remarked, “I can see how people have struggled with … .” 

His comments come in the wake of several controversies surrounding the show. Notably, in 2023, actress Amanda Abbington accused her partner, Giovanni Pernice, of bullying during rehearsals, leading to an internal investigation by the BBC. The inquiry upheld some of Abbington’s complaints, resulting in Pernice’s departure from the show. 

In response to such incidents, the BBC has implemented new duty of care protocols to better support participants. These measures include the introduction of chaperones in rehearsal rooms and conducting psychological assessments to ensure the well-being of both celebrities and professional dancers.
