Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin, two of the most familiar faces on TODAY, recently shared a humorous story from their past that had them both reminiscing and laughing.
In a joint interview with Parade on January 17, the co-hosts looked back on a moment when Guthrie inadvertently disrupted a date between Melvin and his now-wife, Lindsay Czarniak.
A Night Interrupted
Long before Craig Melvin became a co-anchor on TODAY, he was in the early stages of dating sports broadcaster Lindsay Czarniak.
At the time, Guthrie was hosting The Daily Rundown on MSNBC alongside Chuck Todd, and Czarniak was scheduled to appear as a guest on the show.
Melvin recalled the night vividly, sharing how an evening out with Lindsay was unexpectedly cut short due to her television appearance.
“It’s funny because when (Lindsay and I) were dating, I remember vividly one time we went out to dinner,” he said. “The evening was cut short because Lindsay had to be on The Daily Rundown.”
He admitted that he was initially frustrated upon learning the reason for her early departure. “I was like, ‘The show with Chuck and Savannah?’ I (thought), ‘Screw Chuck and Savannah (for) taking you away early,’” he joked.
Proof of Commitment
Not wanting to jump to conclusions, Melvin decided to tune in to The Daily Rundown the next morning to confirm that Lindsay had, in fact, been on the show and wasn’t just trying to escape their date. “I remember the first time that I saw her on the show. She was wearing this yellow dress. Yellow is her favorite color,” he recalled.
Reassured by what he saw, Melvin knew Lindsay had been truthful, and the couple continued dating. Years later, they tied the knot and built a life together with their two children, Delano, 10, and Sybil, 8.
A Full-Circle Moment
Melvin officially joined Guthrie as a TODAY co-anchor on January 13, following Hoda Kotb’s departure from the role. To celebrate the occasion, Lindsay and their children made a special visit to Studio 1A to support Melvin on his big day.
Reflecting on the significance of this moment, Czarniak shared her pride and excitement. “It’s surreal, and to me, it symbolizes belief because you know, you dare to dream a dream and then to see it actually come true,” she said. “It makes me think about a spouse making it to the Super Bowl, or like, the game-winning catch. That’s what this feels like.”
She went on to express admiration for her husband, emphasizing the qualities that make him special. “What makes me so proud is just the person that Melvin is and understanding that it’s the kindness and how genuine he is, so we’re just excited and pumped.”
Longstanding Connections
Savannah Guthrie also revealed that her relationship with Czarniak predates Melvin’s. “You know, (Craig’s) wife, Lindsay, and my husband, Mike (Feldman), have all known each other for a thousand years. I’ve known Lindsay for longer,” Guthrie said.
This longstanding connection makes Melvin’s transition into his new TODAY role feel even more natural, as he and Guthrie share not only a professional bond but also a personal history.
