Former premier league footballer, David Beckham OBE is known for his dedication on the pitch,
but as he explained in his self-titled Netflix documentary, Beckham, that discipline was instilled in his younger years, with the help from his father.
In the documentary Beckham shared how his dad, Ted Beckham, would have him training ‘for hours’,
putting him on a gruelling schedule of sessions from morning to night with a 50p reward for every time he hit the crossbar.
‘I used to say to him, “Right, every time you hit the crossbar, I’ll give you 50p” and it used to cost me a fortune,’ said Ted in the documentary.
‘I’d loved to have been a footballer but I had the next best thing,’ he added. ‘I taught him how to kick a ball properly.’
David Beckham’s dad also implemented a curious diet plan to support the future England captain’s training. ‘I was a bit worried about the size of him,’ said Ted Beckham. ‘So that’s when we started giving him Guinness and raw egg.’
Now, you don’t need us to tell you that giving your children Guinness and raw eggs to gain weight comes with risks. In fact, while Rocky-inspired, raw-egg consumption has been popularised over the years, a study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that the body is only able to absorb 50% of the protein found in raw eggs, compared to 90% in cooked eggs. Plus, there is a risk of salmonella bacteria growing when raw egg is left out.
As for the Guinness, while it actually doesn’t contain enough iron to warrant it being a diet staple, it does contain folate. Folate is a B vitamin that our bodies need to make DNA. However, it has only 3.2% of the RDA per serving. Which, in the grand scheme of things isn’t worth it and supplementation would be more beneficial.
Reflecting on the strict regime, David Beckham said, ‘Even when I was seven or eight years old, he’d boot the ball up as high as he could and say “control it,” “OK, not good enough, do it again,” “Not good enough, do it again” over and over again.’
‘I was scared when he was there because I knew if I put a foot wrong, he’d tell me. And he’d always tell me. Always,’ said Beckham.
