Demi Moore grits her teeth and looks disappointed after 2025 Oscar loss to Mikey Madison

Demi Moore’s journey to the 2025 Academy Awards was one of redemption and recognition,

but despite her incredible performance in *The Substance*, she didn’t take home the gold at the ceremony.

The 62-year-old actress was up for the coveted Best Actress Oscar,

but the award ultimately went to 25-year-old Mikey Madison for her role in *Anora*.

Moore, who had garnered significant attention for her portrayal of a fading actress in *The Substance*, was visibly disappointed when Madison’s name was announced.

A brief moment of gritted teeth was captured on video as Moore processed the loss, but she quickly composed herself and began clapping for Madison in a display of good sportsmanship.

Mikey Madison, in her acceptance speech, expressed her disbelief and gratitude. “This is very surreal,” she shared, acknowledging her roots in Los Angeles and how Hollywood always felt distant to her. She also took a moment to honor the sex worker community, saying, “Yes, I will continue to support and be an ally.” Madison’s character in *Anora* is a sex worker who experiences a Cinderella-like transformation after marrying the son of a Russian oligarch, though their union faces intense resistance from his parents. The film has been praised for its powerful exploration of complex social themes, and Madison’s performance was a key highlight.

On the other hand, *The Substance* tells the story of Moore’s character, a former Oscar-winning actress turned fitness guru and TV star, whose career falters after she turns 50. Despite the role’s complexity and the depth of Moore’s performance, she had to settle for the runner-up spot at the Oscars. However, her turn in *The Substance* was far from unnoticed.

In fact, her co-star, Dennis Quaid, had long recognized Moore’s talent, predicting she would win an Oscar for her performance. “I knew it like my second day working on that movie. I told Demi she’s going to win an Oscar for it,” Quaid said. He praised Moore’s dedication to the role, which required extensive makeup sessions and long hours on set, calling it “a gargantuan effort.” The hard work certainly paid off, earning Moore critical acclaim throughout the awards season.

Though Moore’s Oscar hopes were dashed, her recognition during the 2025 Golden Globes was a defining moment of her career. At the Globes, she won the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for *The Substance*, a victory that surprised even her. “I really wasn’t expecting that,” Moore admitted in her acceptance speech. Her win came as a shock to many, especially since she was up against strong contenders like Cynthia Erivo and Mikey Madison.

In her emotional Golden Globe speech, Moore shared a personal story about how a Hollywood producer once told her she would never be more than a “popcorn actress”—someone who starred in popular, but critically unrecognized films. The words haunted her for years, but she found the strength to overcome that mindset and embrace her worth. “I bought in and I believed that,” Moore confessed. “But today, I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me.”

Her speech resonated deeply with many, especially those who saw it as a powerful affirmation of perseverance. The speech went viral on social media, with many critics and fans alike praising her honesty and vulnerability. It seemed like Moore’s moment had arrived, and she became a front-runner in the race for the Oscar. Throughout the season, she continued to garner accolades, including Best Actress wins at both the Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards, making her one of the most celebrated actresses of the year.

Moore’s path to this point in her career has been anything but conventional. From her breakthrough role in 1985’s *St. Elmo’s Fire* to becoming one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses in the 1990s, Moore’s career has had its ups and downs. While she faced criticism for roles in films like *Striptease* and *G.I. Jane*, she remained resilient. These films, though commercially unsuccessful, cemented her place in Hollywood history as a risk-taker and a trendsetter.

Over the years, Moore has reflected on her experiences in the industry, acknowledging the double standards she faced, particularly regarding her salary and the public scrutiny she received. “When I became the highest-paid actress, why is it that, at that moment, the choice was to bring me down?” she questioned in a 2023 interview. Despite the challenges, Moore’s ability to persevere has made her an inspiration to many.

Although she didn’t win the Oscar in 2025, Demi Moore’s incredible journey, marked by her Golden Globe win and numerous other accolades, proves that it’s never too late to redefine one’s career and achieve greatness. Her inspiring speeches and performances have proven that dreams can come true—even later in life. And while *The Substance* may not have brought home the Oscar, Moore’s legacy in Hollywood remains as strong as ever.
