Denise Richards Reveals She Was Sexually Harassed Early in Her Career — Why She Stayed Silent
Denise Richards is no longer holding back. The Wild Things actress, now 54, has opened up about a painful experience from her early years in Hollywood,
revealing that she was sexually harassed at the start of her career. In a recent interview with People,
Richards admitted that she remained silent about the incident for fear of being blacklisted from the industry she was so passionate about.
The Fear of Speaking Out
Reflecting on the difficult time, Richards shared how vulnerable she felt when faced with such a distressing situation.
“This was the career I wanted to do. To be told that you’re never going to work in an industry that you are passionate about, it’s a hard thing,” she explained. The fear of losing opportunities kept her from coming forward, a reality many actresses in Hollywood faced before movements like #MeToo encouraged survivors to share their experiences.
Richards, who launched her acting career in the early 1990s, quickly became a recognizable name in Hollywood. She landed major roles in films such as Starship Troopers, Wild Things, and The World Is Not Enough, where she portrayed a Bond girl. However, like many young actresses trying to establish themselves in the industry, she found herself in situations where she felt powerless.
A Changing Industry
Despite the pain of staying silent, Richards acknowledges that things have changed significantly in Hollywood since she first started. She expressed her appreciation for the fact that women today have more of a voice and greater protections in the workplace.
“I am glad that women are able to have more of a voice and be more protected,” she said, referencing the impact of the #MeToo movement, which gained momentum in 2017. The movement shed light on the widespread issue of sexual harassment and assault in the entertainment industry, holding powerful figures accountable for their actions.
Had she faced the same situation today, Richards believes she would have responded differently. “If that happened at this age, I would handle it differently, but I was so young and an unknown and [just] starting out,” she admitted.
Raising Strong Daughters
In addition to her acting career, Richards has also made a name for herself in the reality TV world. After starring in two seasons of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, she is now set to return with her own Bravo series, Denise Richards & Her Wild Things. The show will feature her husband, Aaron Phypers, and her three daughters: Sami, 20, Lola, 19, and Eloise, 13.
Richards takes great pride in the confidence her daughters exude, something she wishes she had when she was younger. “I look at my daughters doing our show and being such strong women,” she said. “If I had that, I think I would’ve been able to handle it a little differently.”
She admires their ability to stand up for themselves and speak their minds, something she struggled with early in her career. “I wish I had the confidence that they have because I would never be able to stand out for myself the way they do, and I’m so proud of them. I’m so proud that they say what’s on their mind.”
Overcoming the Need to Please
Richards also reflected on how her personality played a role in her silence during the early years of her career. “I was such a people pleaser,” she admitted, noting that she often put others’ needs and expectations above her own.
Seeing her daughters’ strength, however, has been an eye-opening experience. “And I love that my girls, this early in their career, that they’re able to [speak up],” she said. “Sometimes I’m like, ‘You might want to tone it down,’ but for the most part, I’m glad that they’re able to say [what’s on their mind]. I wish I was able to back then.”
A New Chapter with Reality TV
Richards’ return to reality television with Denise Richards & Her Wild Things promises to give fans an intimate look at her life. One of the most anticipated moments from the show is a rare on-screen interaction between Richards and her ex-husband, Charlie Sheen.
During a recent appearance on Bravo’s Hot Mic podcast, Richards teased that Sheen, 59, will make a surprising appearance in the series. “Nobody has ever seen Charlie and I after our divorce sitting in a room talking,” she revealed. “I think that’s one of the things that I love that we were able to capture—us having that moment of sharing that.”
Richards shares her two older daughters, Sami and Lola, with Sheen, while she adopted her youngest, Eloise, as a single mother in 2013.
Looking to the Future
As Richards embarks on this new chapter of her career, she is using her platform to speak out about her past and reflect on how far she has come. Although she once felt powerless to speak up about her experiences with sexual harassment, she now encourages women to find their voice and stand up for themselves.
With a new reality show, a close-knit family, and a fresh perspective on life, Denise Richards is proving that she is no longer afraid to speak her truth. Hollywood may not have always been a safe space for young actresses like her, but she is determined to ensure that the next generation—especially her daughters—can navigate it with strength, confidence, and resilience.
