‘Devastated’ Susanna Reid Fights Back Tears as She Tells GMB Guest ‘I Have Boys Your Age’

Susanna Reid was visibly emotional on Good Morning Britain as she spoke with the family of Elliot Pullen, one of three teenagers tragically killed in a high-speed crash.

The veteran broadcaster admitted she was left devastated by the heartbreaking incident and found it particularly difficult to discuss,

given that she is a mother to three boys of similar age.

During Monday’s episode of the ITV show, Susanna, 57, and her co-host Ed Balls, 54,

welcomed Elliot’s sister Mia Pullen and his aunt Laura Oakes for a deeply moving discussion.

As they shared their grief, the impact of the tragedy became overwhelmingly clear.

A Tragic Loss: The Fatal 100mph Crash

The horrific accident occurred in June 2023 when Elliot Pullen (17), Daniel Hancock (18), and Ethan Goddard (18) were passengers in a car driven by Thomas Johnson, 19.

Johnson was captured driving his BMW at over 100mph in a 30mph zone, recklessly overtaking other vehicles. Moments before the crash, video footage showed him inhaling laughing gas, raising further concerns about dangerous driving and substance use among young motorists.

The reckless journey ended in tragedy when Johnson lost control and crashed into a tree in Marcham, Oxfordshire. The impact was catastrophic, killing Elliot, Daniel, and Ethan instantly.

While Johnson suffered life-threatening injuries, he survived the crash. In December 2024, he pleaded guilty to three counts of causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to nine years in prison.

Susanna Reid’s Emotional Reaction on GMB

As she spoke to Elliot’s grieving family, Susanna struggled to hold back tears, deeply moved by their pain. She reflected on how devastating the tragedy must be for the victims’ loved ones and how the story resonated with her as a mother.

“It is such an absolutely senseless loss of life,” she said, her voice breaking.

She then turned to Elliot’s sister, Mia, and aunt Laura, and said:

“I have boys your age.”

Her words struck a chord, highlighting the universal fear parents face—the idea that their children could find themselves in dangerous situations beyond their control.

A Family Torn Apart by Tragedy

During the interview, Mia Pullen spoke openly about the devastating impact the accident has had on her family.

“I just want people to see the horror this has caused our family,” she said.

She described how the loss of Elliot had ripped their family apart and created a ripple effect of grief that has extended far beyond their immediate relatives.

“Our lives will never be the same,” Mia added. “It’s had such a ripple effect over the families, the friends—everyone.”

The pain was evident as Mia and Laura shared their grief, pleading for awareness so that no other family would have to endure such heartbreak.

A Call for Awareness: The Dangers of Reckless Driving

The heartbreaking loss of Elliot, Daniel, and Ethan has sparked renewed concerns about reckless driving among young motorists.

The case has particularly drawn attention to:

🔹 The dangers of excessive speeding

🔹 The risks associated with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) use behind the wheel

🔹 The lasting consequences of irresponsible driving decisions

The sentencing of Thomas Johnson to nine years in prison has been met with mixed reactions—some believe it is too lenient, given the irreparable damage he caused.

However, the families of the victims hope that sharing their tragic story will serve as a stark warning to other young drivers, preventing similar tragedies in the future.

A Heartbreaking Reminder for Parents

Susanna’s emotional response on Good Morning Britain highlighted a fear shared by all parents—the worry that their children, no matter how responsible they may be, could fall victim to someone else’s recklessness.

Her heartfelt words, “I have boys your age,” captured the deep personal connection she felt to the tragedy, making the interview even more poignant.

As the families of Elliot, Daniel, and Ethan continue to grieve, their mission is clear: to ensure no other family has to suffer the same devastating loss.
