WE’VE heard some pretty bizarre acceptance speeches in our time but Emma Watson has taken the biscuit with a tribute to her dead hamster at the recent Britannia Awards.
The Harry Potter starlet was being honoured at the ceremony in LA where she was awarded British Artist of the Year.
When taking to the stage to accept her prize.
The 24-year-old decided to use a rather strange anecdote as an example of how the film industry became a “surrogate family” to her, as she grew up in the spotlight.
She told of how her hamster, Millie, died of a heart attack while she was starring as the young Hermione Granger in the first Harry Potter film.
The designer on set took it upon themselves to create a mahogany “hamster coffin”, complete with velvet lining and a silver name plaque, to give the pet a proper send off.
She clarified the point of the story by adding: “What I’m trying to say is, is you’re all very special to me, and your vote of confidence means a lot.
“I take it as such a great honour that you’re giving me this award tonight.
“Thank you very, very much, and rest in peace, Millie. This one’s for you.”
Emma dazzled at the glitzy event in a sparkling top and trousers combo giving the star a sophisticated look.
Also being honoured at the award ceremony were actors Dame Judi Dench, Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo and director Mike Leigh.
