Everything is not what it seems for Emma Watson as she discovers the dark side of technology in the first trailer for The Circle.  

The movie, based on the 2013 Dave Eggers novel of the same name, sees the 26-year-old as protagonist Mae Holland.

Mae is thrilled when she lands a job at the hippest, most influential company around: the Circle, which is a thinly veiled version of Google.

Tom Hanks portrays Eamon Bailey, the man behind the company, which gives users one internet identity and encourages full disclosure.

Or, as Mae describes it in her interview: ‘It’s the chaos of the web made elegant.’ 

And naturally it doesn’t take long for the new college graduate, who claims she is most scared of ‘unfulfilled potential’, to learn that life at the Circle isn’t quite what she first imagined.

The trailer features a build up of intensity – and even a shot of Mae screaming – while leader Eamon gives a speech to his adoring followers.

‘I am a believer in the perfectibility of human beings,’ he says. ‘When we are our best selves, the possibilities are endless. At the Circle, the possibilities are endless.

‘There is not a problem that we cannot solve. We can cure any disease and we can end hunger.

‘Without secrets, without the hoarding of knowledge and information, we can finally realise our potential.

‘We will see it all. If it happens, we’ll know. Imagine the human rights implications. There needs to accountability.’

He adds: ‘Because knowing is good, but knowing everything is better.’ 

John Boyega also stars in the film, and his character Kalden is shown taking Mae to a secret location at the Circle and telling her about a program that ‘has the power to change everything’. 

The story follows Mae as she becomes famous when she agrees to the company’s code of total transparency.

Mae allows the public to follow her life through SeeChange cameras, which are glass eyeballs that capture her every move. But fame isn’t as great as it might seem.

Director James Ponsoldt explained to USA Today: ‘She becomes a pseudo-celebrity with her superpower, that she’s natural, relatable and willing to speak freely about everything in her life.

‘But it gets to the point where it’s almost a religion and then a glass prison of celebrity.’ 

The sci-fi thriller, which also features Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt and Boyhood’s Ellar Coltrane, is due for release on April 28, 2017.
