the most of any female player in the Open Era. The former World No. 1 drew curtains on her trailblazing career in 2022.
Serena Williams decided the US Open as the venue for her swansong, and it was a fairytale campaign for the American as she reached the third round.
Since then, she has focused on other aspects of her life like raising a family and dedicating attention to her business ventures.
The American recently sat down for an interview with the New York Times ahead of the release of her documentary “In the Arena: Serena Williams,” which chronicles her tennis journey. During the conversation, Williams was asked about the stir she created after tweeting that she was ready to “hit some balls again.”
The post went viral on social media, with many tennis fanatics seeing it as Williams’ way of telling the world about her return to the sport. Williams rubbished the claims during her interview, saying she was not hinting at anything. She was just eager to hit some balls after a long time.
“It wasn’t cryptic. I literally am ready to hit balls. I haven’t hit in a long time. It’s my life, and I love it and I miss it so much. I did learn I shouldn’t post it on Twitter, because people think I’m coming back, and I’m like, ‘No,’ Williams said.
Serena Williams defeated World No. 2 during her final US Open campaign
Serena Williams recaptured her old magic at the 2022 US Open and dazzled the spectators with her powerful style of tennis. To the delight of her fans, Williams bettered Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3 in the first round to continue her streak of never losing in the opening round at Flushing Meadows.
Williams came up against then-World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit in the second round at the US Open. The American pulled off the upset of the tournament as she downed the Estonian 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2 to progress to the third round. In the process, she became the oldest woman to beat a top-3-ranked player.
Serena Williams’ swansong came to an end in the third round as she was defeated by Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1. Williams also paired up with her sister Venus to play doubles in New York. Unfortunately, they lost in the opening round to Czech duo of Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova.
