GMA’s Michael Strahan marks co-star’s surprise retirement news with bittersweet tribute

Michael Strahan has paid a heartfelt tribute to his longtime colleague, Jimmy Johnson, as the legendary coach and sports analyst retires from broadcasting.

Johnson, a key figure on NFL on Fox for nearly three decades, announced on March 3 that the 2024 season would be his last,

bringing an end to an illustrious career in football analysis.

A Legendary Career in Broadcasting

Jimmy Johnson, 81, has been a familiar face on NFL on Fox since 1994, taking a brief break before returning full-time in 2002.

Over the years, he became a cornerstone of the network’s football coverage, offering sharp insights, candid analysis, and his signature charisma.

His decision to step away from broadcasting marks the end of a 31-year journey in sports media.

Breaking the news on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Johnson reflected on his decision, saying: “I’ve made an extremely difficult decision. I’ve been thinking about it for the last four or five years, and I’ve decided to retire from FOX. I’m going to miss it. I’m going to miss all the guys, and I’ll see them occasionally, but it has been a great run starting back 31 years ago.”

Michael Strahan’s Emotional Farewell

Strahan, who has worked alongside Johnson on NFL on Fox since 2008, took to social media to celebrate his friend’s remarkable career. Sharing a touching photo of the two embracing on set, Strahan wrote:

“Congratulations on your retirement @jimmyjohnson4616! It has been 17 seasons of fun and laughs sitting next to you. You’re truly one of a kind, and thanks for being you and gifting me with one of the best friendships anyone could ever ask for. Hope you enjoy fishing and drinking beers on the boat. You deserve it, love you Coach!”

Johnson responded warmly to Strahan’s message, calling him “one of the nicest, most talented individuals I’ve ever known…great friend.” Their bond, built over years of analyzing games together, was evident in Strahan’s emotional farewell.

Johnson’s Impact on the NFL and Broadcasting

Before making a name for himself in broadcasting, Johnson had an iconic coaching career, most notably as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 1989 to 1993. Under his leadership, the team achieved back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 1993 and 1994, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. His transition to television allowed him to continue shaping the game, providing expertise and humor that made him a fan favorite.

Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks acknowledged Johnson’s contributions, stating:

“Jimmy Johnson was there when FOX NFL SUNDAY came on-air for the first time 31 years ago and has since been a cherished member of our FOX Sports family. His legendary swagger, one-of-a-kind insight, and signature humor made him an inspiration to generations of football fans.”

Shanks also recalled a particularly emotional moment in Johnson’s career, when the network surprised him live on-air with the announcement of his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame—an unforgettable milestone for the beloved coach.

A Fitting End to a Storied Career

Johnson’s final season with NFL on Fox culminated in February with his coverage of Super Bowl LIX, marking a fitting conclusion to his broadcasting career. As he steps away from the spotlight, he leaves behind a legacy of excellence, both as a coach and as an analyst.

Strahan’s tribute highlights not just Johnson’s professional achievements, but also the deep friendships he formed throughout his career. While fans will undoubtedly miss his presence on Sundays, Johnson now looks forward to a well-earned retirement—one filled with relaxation, fishing, and, as Strahan humorously noted, a few cold beers on the boat.

For football fans and colleagues alike, Jimmy Johnson’s impact on the game and sports media will be remembered for years to come.
