GMB’s Charlotte Hawkins on supporting Kate Garraway and navigating grief

Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins is gracing the cover of Prima’s May issue,

where she reflects on her journey in television, the challenges she faced as a young female broadcaster,

and the unbreakable bond among the GMB team, especially in supporting their colleague Kate Garraway through a heartbreaking loss.

A Tribute to Kate Garraway’s Strength

Charlotte expresses her deep admiration for Kate Garraway, who has shown immense resilience in the face of personal tragedy.

Kate’s husband, Derek Draper, who contracted Covid-19 in March 2020, sadly passed away in January 2024.

Throughout his long battle with the aftermath of the virus, Kate remained steadfast in her dedication to caring for him while also continuing her career and raising their children.

Charlotte acknowledges the immense love and strength that fueled Kate’s perseverance. “She wanted to be strong for Derek and the family,” Charlotte shares. “It’s love that keeps you going and gets you through situations like that – love for the person you’re caring for, for your family that you need to be strong for, and for the people around you who are helping to support you.”

Understanding Grief and Offering Support

Having experienced personal loss herself, Charlotte understands the pain of grief. She lost her father to motor neurone disease in 2015, which gave her a deep perspective on coping with loss. “When you lose someone you love very much, it’s a constant pain,” she explains. “You wonder what the way forward will be, and it’s not a question of getting over it, but learning to live with it.”

The Good Morning Britain team has come together to support Kate during this difficult time. Charlotte emphasizes how much their close-knit bond has meant to them all. “We have to be there for each other, and that’s never been more important than now,” she adds.

Breaking Barriers as a Female Broadcaster

Charlotte also reflects on her early years in the television industry, acknowledging the challenges she faced as a young woman trying to establish herself. “I felt I had to work twice as hard to prove myself,” she admits. “As a young woman, I couldn’t give people any reason to doubt me, whether that was getting something factually wrong or asking a silly question. But I’m glad that things have improved since then.”

Her perseverance and dedication paid off, earning her a respected position in broadcasting. Today, she is a familiar face on Good Morning Britain, admired for her professionalism and warm presence on screen.

A Future Journalist in the Family?

Charlotte’s passion for journalism seems to have inspired the next generation in her family. Her nine-year-old daughter, Ella Rose, appears eager to follow in her mother’s footsteps. “She seems to be after my job!” Charlotte laughs. “She wants to be a journalist when she grows up, and when she was seven, she interviewed George Ezra live on GMB.”

The experience was a proud moment for Charlotte, as she watched her daughter confidently handle the interview. Now, Ella Rose is even more interested in the media world. “She asks me who we have coming on the show and whether she can come into the studio – she’ll have my job before I know it!” Charlotte jokes.

Life Beyond Television

Beyond her role on Good Morning Britain, Charlotte embraces life’s simple joys. The May issue of Prima delves into her experiences and those of others who have found comfort in creative and active pursuits. The magazine highlights inspiring stories, including individuals discovering the healing power of pottery and presenter Jenni Falconer sharing the benefits of running.

In addition, the issue explores topics that resonate with many readers, such as navigating breakups healthily, understanding why music evokes strong emotions, and enjoying vibrant vegetarian recipes.

Looking Ahead

Charlotte Hawkins continues to make her mark in broadcasting while balancing family life. With her unwavering dedication, she remains an inspiration to many, not only as a journalist but as a supportive friend and mother. As she embraces the present and looks toward the future, one thing is certain—her passion for storytelling and compassion for those around her will continue to shine.

The May issue of Prima offers an in-depth look at Charlotte’s journey, personal reflections, and the uplifting stories of others. It’s a celebration of resilience, ambition, and the power of support in times of hardship.
