Lara Spencer Shares Recovery Update After Undergoing Surgery on Both Feet
“Good Morning America” co-anchor Lara Spencer recently revealed that she had undergone surgery on both of her feet, sharing an update with fans on social media.
The 55-year-old journalist posted two photos on Instagram, giving followers a glimpse into her recovery journey and explaining the reasons behind the procedures.
In the candid post, Spencer maintained her signature humor despite the challenging situation.
“If I look a little groggy, it’s thanks to this guy who just gave me a new pair of boots,” she wrote, referring to her doctor.
“Wish they were cowboy boots, but that will come in about six weeks, hopefully.”
The first photo in her post featured Spencer posing with her surgeon, Dr. Marty O’Malley, while the second image displayed her legs wrapped in gauze and ace bandages. She sported a gray mid-calf medical boot on her left foot and a black ankle boot on her right.
Spencer went on to explain that the procedure on her right foot was relatively minor—she simply had a plate removed from a previous surgery. However, her left foot required a more complex operation due to a decades-old injury she sustained during her college diving days.
“I was doing a reverse one and a half and hit the board, shattering toes and joints,” she recalled. “Back then, they said there was nothing you could do except tape it, let it heal, and live with the pain. Today, there are much better options, thanks to surgeons like Dr. Marty O’Malley at HSS.”
As she recovers, Spencer found a lighthearted way to sum up her situation, quoting the famous Nancy Sinatra song: “These boots were made for walking.”
Fans and colleagues quickly flooded the comments section with words of encouragement and well wishes. Among them was Spencer’s “GMA” co-star Rebecca Jarvis, who expressed her support with a heartfelt message: “Sweetie!! Feel better soon. ❤️🩹”
Others also chimed in, applauding Spencer’s resilience. “Amazing the advances they have made. Heal quickly,” one follower wrote, while another joked about her medical boots, saying, “Omg!!! Love the new open-toed shoes.”
U.S. champion figure skater Adam Rippon also joined in on the fun, adding a humorous comment, while Dr. Jen Ashton, ABC News’ chief medical correspondent, marveled at Spencer’s toughness. “Jesus!!! Who does both feet at the same time???? My girl, that’s who! So tough! Sending u speedy love to fast recovery! We’ve got dancing to do! ❤️❤️”
Another commenter reassured Spencer, praising her surgeon’s expertise. “Dr. O’Malley is the best! No doubt you’ll be back on your feet again soon! 😊”
Spencer has not yet shared a timeline for her full recovery, but it’s clear she’s maintaining an upbeat attitude as she heals. Known for her vibrant on-screen presence, she is sure to return to “Good Morning America” stronger than ever.
