Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid halts live broadcast for ‘breaking news’ announcement

Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley paused their regular programming on Monday

to deliver a breaking news update regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The interruption came just after 8:00 AM when they shared significant remarks from former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson,

who spoke exclusively to the programme about potential diplomatic developments.

Boris Johnson’s Take on a Possible Ukraine Deal

Reid introduced the update, stating:

“Good Morning Britain, it has just gone eight o’clock, and our main breaking news this morning:

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson tells this programme there is a deal to be done over Ukraine, and now is the time for the UK to step up in negotiations with the US to end [the conflict].”

Her co-host, Richard Madeley, elaborated on Johnson’s remarks, explaining that the former Prime Minister predicted a forthcoming deal between the US and Ukraine, particularly over mineral rights. Johnson suggested this development could significantly shift America’s involvement in the situation.

“He was speaking here live just a few minutes ago, predicting that there will be a deal in the next couple of days between America and Ukraine over mineral rights, which effectively, he says, will put America back with skin in the game. Big game changer, he said,” Madeley added.

The discussion also touched on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent declaration that he would be willing to step down from office if it could guarantee peace for his country.

Diplomatic Meetings and Global Reactions

The breaking news came at a crucial time, with diplomatic activity ramping up in response to the ongoing war. Madeley noted that UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer was set to travel to Washington later in the week for discussions with US President Joe Biden.

To provide on-the-ground insight, Good Morning Britain’s chief correspondent Richard Gaisford joined the broadcast live from Kyiv. He described an emergency summit taking place in the Ukrainian capital, where 13 world leaders were gathering to show their support for Ukraine.

“They’re standing shoulder to shoulder with him, not just against Vladimir Putin, but seemingly, now increasingly, against Donald Trump as well,” Gaisford reported.

Boris Johnson’s Surprise Appearance in Kyiv

In a surprising twist, Gaisford revealed that Boris Johnson had been spotted walking through the streets of Kyiv earlier that morning. The unexpected sighting led to a brief but revealing exchange between the journalist and the former Prime Minister.

“Bit of a surprise to see Boris Johnson just walk past us here in the center of Kyiv this morning. It’s clear, having spoken to him, that he’s not happy with Donald Trump’s approach but says there is a deal to be done with the US,” Gaisford explained.

Good Morning Britain then aired footage of Johnson’s conversation with Reid and Madeley, where he reiterated his belief that European nations, including the UK, must take decisive action.

Johnson Calls for Stronger UK and European Involvement

During his conversation with the ITV presenters, Johnson emphasized that now was a pivotal moment for the UK and its allies to reinforce their commitment to Ukraine.

“You’ve just got to keep knocking the ball back over there,” he remarked.

Expanding on his thoughts, he added:

“I mean, this is crazy stuff, and I agree it’s all well in, but you’ve got to look at what is actually being proposed. And I think, to a certain extent, the deal-making going on, the brinkmanship now is the moment for us to step up and do what I think that Trump wants Europe to do, and that is show how we have a plan to help secure Ukraine.”

Perhaps most notably, Johnson hinted at a potential military commitment from European nations, suggesting that UK and French troops, along with forces from other European countries, could be deployed as part of a broader effort to support Ukraine.

“And that’s going to mean, I believe, UK troops, there are going to be French troops, troops as another European country,” he stated, though he did not provide specifics on what such a deployment might entail.

A Major Development in the Ukraine Conflict?

Johnson’s remarks sparked immediate discussion, as they hinted at significant geopolitical shifts in the coming days. With heightened diplomatic efforts, potential negotiations involving mineral rights, and growing concerns over Trump’s stance on the war, the situation remains fluid.

For Good Morning Britain, the breaking news moment underscored the importance of real-time journalism in covering global crises. Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley’s decision to halt their regular programming to report on Johnson’s comments highlighted the gravity of the developing story.

As world leaders continue their discussions in Kyiv and Washington, all eyes will be on whether Johnson’s prediction of a deal between the US and Ukraine comes to fruition—and what role the UK may ultimately play in securing peace for Ukraine.
