Harry and Meghan’s post-royal portrait bought by Kate Princess Museum, really? (video)

Astriking portrait of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle taken after their split from the royal family in 2020 has been acquired

by Britain’s National Portrait Gallery this month, forming part of its permanent collection.

The gallery holds Britain’s national collection of portraits spanning over 215,000 paintings and photographs.

Many representations of members of the royal family throughout history feature in the collection, including images of Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The National Portrait Gallery holds a special link to Harry and Meghan’s sister-in-law, Princess Kate, as she was made the institution’s royal patron by Elizabeth in 2012.

The patronage was announced as one of Kate’s first roles after her marriage to Prince William in 2011. She has attended regular events at the institution’s London home in recent years.

The gallery’s acquisition of a new portrait of Harry and Meghan, taken in 2022, was announced on X (formerly Twitter) by photographer Misan Harriman on May 23.

Harriman has photographed the couple intimately on regular occasions since their marriage in 2018 and began a personal friendship with Meghan in the years before her introduction into the royal family. He accompanied the couple on their three-day visit to Nigeria in West Africa this month.

Harriman posted images where he was signing a print of the duke and duchess that shows them in black and white standing in profile during a visit to Manchester, England, for the One Young World Summit in September 2022. He wrote:

“I am humbled and proud to announce that my portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is now part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Dare to dream folks!”
