Harry surprised his future spouse, Meghan, with a romantic gesture to commemorate the occasion, causing a media frenzy

As the UK revels in the aftermath of this year’s general election and the USA commemorates another firework-laden Independence Day,

the 4th of July holds a unique significance for Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle – it marks the anniversary of their second date.

Back in the summer of 2016, when Harry was 39 and Meghan was 42, their first encounter was so enjoyable that they promptly arranged to see each other again the next day.

Harry even decided to surprise his future spouse with a romantic gesture to commemorate the occasion.

In his memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex reminisces about the crucial date: “She walked in, wearing a pretty blue sundress with white pinstripes.

She was aglow. I stood and said: ‘I bear gifts.’ A pink box. I held it forward. She shook it. ‘What’s this? ‘”.

“She opened the box. Cupcakes. Red, white and blue cupcakes, to be exact. In honour of Independence Day. I said something about the Brits having a very different view of Independence Day from the Yanks, but oh, well.”

At that time, Harry was residing in the UK while California-born Meghan was working in Canada on her hit legal drama series Suits. Despite the geographical distance, love quickly flourished between them, with the Prince asserting that he could make the relationship work and give it a “proper go.”, reports the Express.

Eight years on, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are happily married, doting parents to their kids – Prince Archie and Princess Lililbet, and are enjoying their suburb life in Montecito, California post stepping back from Royal duties in 2020.

Even though they’re residing in America, the Prince doesn’t seem keen on adopting American citizenship anytime soon.

During an interview on Good Morning America back in February 2024, Harry openly admitted: “American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind but certainly not something that is a high priority for me right now.”

Notwithstanding this, he warmly shared that his life with Meghan and their children stateside was wonderful, expressing: “It’s amazing. I love every single day.”

However, when asked directly by show host Will Reeve if he felt American, the Royal stopped short of agreement and rather hesitated, commenting: “Do I feel American? Um, no. I don’t know how I feel.”
