“All I can focus on is playing good golf,” admitted an optimistic Patrick Reed after Saturday’s round at the Masters in April when asked about the 2024 U.S. Open invitation.
Fast forward to May, and the golfer went about surprising everyone with his latest actions when he withdrew from the qualifiers for the third major of the year.
Such news would have surely brought a frown to Greg Norman’s face, and quite naturally so, since there are only a total of 10 LIV Golf Pros inside the field for the clash at Pinehurst No. 2.
However, the fans do not seem to agree, as they took to expressing the same in an Instagram post shared by Golf Digest.
The upload done just hours ago points out how Patrick Reed’s WD from the U.S. Open Qualifier marks an end to his major appearance streak, which started 10 years ago at the 2014 Masters.
Many have long accused the LIV golfer of cheating. Ever since his college days at the University of Georgia, he has been faced with allegations,
including that he played a different ball close to the fairway after his tee shot. Moreover, he faced accusations of stealing a watch, $400, and a Scotty Cameron putter from the team’s facility.
A user alluded to the same while commenting, “This guy had such a draw to him, his competitive fire, his want to be great, but then he cheats on camera in the bunker and joins LIV, where competitors go to NOT COMPETE for participation money. A fall from grace I believe they call that.” Meanwhile, another person sarcastically responded, “We’re all being cheated out of the P Reed experience.” Well, it looks like the golfing enthusiasts are sure set on following Brandel Chamblee’s suit and dubbing him a ‘cheater’ just like the reporter did at the 2023 Dubai Desert Classic.
During the 2024 PGA Championship that took place recently, Patrick Reed failed to make a mark, thereby finishing T53 with a score of 5-under 279. He did so while carding a total of 14 birdies, 11 bogeys, and an eagle over the four days, thereby failing to turn heads. A follower of the sport, as a result of his finish, sarcastically commented, “He played in the PGA last week? Didn’t notice” while another responded, “Not even trying to be s***ty but I completely forgot he existed.” The cream of the crop came when a user commented, “He will not be missed!” Interestingly, such a response from the community, coupled with the fact that there are other LIV professionals in the upcoming major, might be more than enough to console Norman.
The 2024 PGA Championship featured 16 athletes from the PIF-funded circuit. However, as of now, there are only a total of 10 LIV golfers who are currently exempt from the U.S. Open: Eugenio Chacarra, Adrian Meronk, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Martin Kaymer, Phil Mickelson, and Tyrrell Hatton.
There would also be other players from the disruptive league competing at various other U.S. Open qualifiers on June 3, all the while aiming for a spot on the field, just like Chacarra did so. He earned one of 11 spots available from Monday’s U.S. Open qualifier, which took place at the Dallas Athletic Club in Texas. The golfer did so by scoring a total of 6-under over two rounds. With more qualifiers to take place, all might not be lost for Norman.
