Hugh Grant reveals he almost poisoned his kids twice after cooking disaster

Hugh Grant is one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors, with a career spanning several decades and an impressive array of performances.

From charming audiences in romantic comedies to taking on darker roles in films like Heretic, Grant continues to shine in both the film industry and the public eye.

Despite his many talents, there is one skill he admits to lacking: cooking.

In a recent interview with his Bridget Jones’s Diary co-star Renée Zellweger for British Vogue, Grant opened up about his family life,

revealing an amusing yet relatable reason why he won’t be cooking for his children again.

A Cooking Disaster That Led to a Family Plea

Grant, now 64, shared a funny but slightly alarming story about a cooking mishap that led to his children begging him to never cook again. “I’ve poisoned my family twice, given them worms,” he confessed. The actor explained that he had undercooked chicken, not once but twice, which led to a particularly unpleasant experience. “It was on the barbecue, and I stuck my Heston Blumenthal prod into it,” Grant recalled, referring to a cooking thermometer that he struggled to read properly. “So I served it out—worms all round.” His children, understandably distressed by the incident, now refuse to let him near the kitchen. “The children now beg me not to cook,” he laughed, fully aware of the lasting impact his cooking disasters have had on his family.

Hugh Grant’s Family Life with Anna Eberstein

Grant shares three children with his wife, Anna Eberstein, whom he married in 2018 after over a decade of knowing each other. The couple had a private registry office wedding and has largely kept their family life out of the public eye. Together, they are raising their three children, including their youngest, who was born just a couple of months before their wedding.

In addition to his three children with Anna, Grant is also a father to two children, Tabitha and Felix, from a previous relationship with Tinglan Hong. Despite his typically private nature, Grant shared some charming details about his family in a 2024 interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live. He revealed the names of his two youngest children with Anna and even gave insight into the inspiration behind their unique names.

Lulu Danger Grant and Blue Grant

Grant’s children have names as distinctive as their father’s career. His daughter, Lulu, is named in part for a playful reason. Grant explained that he and Anna wanted Lulu to have a name that she could one day brag about in bars. “We thought it might be nice for her when she was older if she could say in bars that her middle name is Danger,” Grant humorously shared. This decision was inspired by the character of Austin Powers and its playful use of “Danger” as a moniker.

As for their son, Blue, his name comes from a more sentimental place. Grant revealed that they asked Lulu’s older brother what they should name the new baby on the way. He suggested “Kevin,” inspired by his favorite Minion character from the Despicable Me movies. Though they ultimately chose not to go with “Kevin,” they settled on “Blue,” his favorite color at the time. Blue was born in January 2018, just months before Grant and Anna’s wedding.

A Father Who Values Time with His Kids

Despite his busy career, Hugh Grant is a hands-on father who clearly values his time with his children. In interviews, Grant has admitted to the challenges of balancing work with fatherhood, particularly when filming on location. He shared on The Kelly Clarkson Show that being away from home can be tough, especially with his large family. “There’s a lot to dread because I’m old, and it’s noisy, and it’s unbearable,” he joked about the demands of parenting. “I do a lot of hiding in the loo,” he added, referring to his occasional need to escape for some peace and quiet.

However, it’s not all chaos for Grant. He also enjoys the sweeter moments of fatherhood, particularly the affectionate “chimpanzee hugs” from his six-year-old daughter. “The bit where they jump in your arms,” Grant said, getting emotional. “I quite like that.” The tenderness in his voice during this admission shows just how deeply he cherishes the bond he shares with his children, even amidst the noise and chaos of family life.

Balancing Family and Career

Hugh Grant may have a reputation for playing charming scoundrels on screen, but his real-life persona reveals a loving and devoted father with a dry sense of humor. Though he’ll likely never cook again for fear of giving his children worms, it’s clear that Grant’s role as a father is one he embraces wholeheartedly, finding joy in the small, tender moments that make parenting worthwhile. As his career continues to thrive, particularly with his upcoming return as Daniel Cleaver in the Bridget Jones sequel, it’s evident that Grant is equally committed to his family, making sure his personal life remains just as fulfilling as his professional one.
