I’ll never get over the way Simon Cowell treated me. If I’d been Liam Payne’s age it might have finished me: Steve Brookstein breaks silence on truth of what happened after he won X Factor – and the ‘vindictive’ final blow

Steve Brookstein, the winner of the first season of The X Factor in the UK, recently opened up about the mistreatment he faced from Simon Cowell and the lasting impact it has had on him.

In an emotional interview, Brookstein revealed that he has never been able to get over how Cowell treated him after his victory, sharing that the experience was far more painful than people realize.

Reflecting on the aftermath of his win, Brookstein expressed how Cowell’s actions toward him were both dismissive and, at times, cruel,

casting a shadow over what should have been a celebratory moment in his career. He even went so far as to say that had he been a younger contestant, like Liam Payne,

the mistreatment might have been enough to end his career entirely.

Brookstein, who won The X Factor in 2004, was thrust into the spotlight after his victory, but his time in the music industry following the show was marred by tension with Cowell.

Despite winning the competition, Brookstein found himself on the receiving end of harsh criticism from the very person who had once championed his talent. He claimed that Cowell’s treatment of him after the show was not only unkind but also “vindictive,” with Cowell seemingly working against his success rather than supporting him. The lack of guidance and support, combined with Cowell’s public dismissals, left Brookstein feeling isolated and disillusioned with the industry that had promised so much.

In his interview, Brookstein admitted that the emotional toll of Cowell’s behavior was profound. He believed that the pressure and mistreatment he faced contributed to his struggles in the years that followed. Unlike some of the younger winners, such as Payne, who went on to achieve international fame, Brookstein’s career faltered after the show, and he never reached the heights of success he had hoped for. Reflecting on his experience, he shared that the constant undermining of his talent and the lack of encouragement from Cowell had a lasting impact on his confidence. If he had been younger, he believes the emotional and professional toll might have been more than he could handle, potentially ending his career before it ever truly began.

Brookstein also spoke about the “final blow” that led to his eventual departure from the spotlight. After his win, the promised record deals and career opportunities never materialized, and he was left to deal with the reality of being just another contestant whose victory did not result in lasting fame. He described how Cowell’s actions, which included sidelining him and ignoring his musical direction, added to his sense of betrayal. It became clear to Brookstein that Cowell had already moved on to the next contestant, leaving him to fend for himself in an industry that had little interest in nurturing his career. This final blow, as Brookstein called it, was the moment that shattered his belief in the industry and in Cowell as a mentor.

Despite the harsh treatment he faced, Brookstein has found ways to rebuild his life and career on his own terms. While he still carries the scars of his experience with The X Factor and Cowell, he has learned to embrace his own path and focus on his music without relying on the expectations of the entertainment industry. His story serves as a cautionary tale of how success on a reality show doesn’t always lead to a long-lasting career, especially when the person who holds the power to shape that career is unsupportive or dismissive. Brookstein’s silence has been broken, and through sharing his truth, he hopes to offer insight into the darker side of reality television and the often-painful aftermath of fame.
