Good Morning Britain viewers were treated to an unexpected moment of live television humor
when Susanna Reid had to pause the ITV show to correct an error about her former co-host, Ben Shephard.
The blunder occurred during a lighthearted discussion about golf, but it quickly became a talking point when Shephard himself got involved to set the record straight.
Ben Shephard’s Golf Handicap Mishap
During Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley were chatting with Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke about his new golf podcast.
As the conversation turned to the sport, Reid casually mentioned her friend and former colleague Ben Shephard’s golf skills.
When Richard Madeley inquired about Shephard’s golf handicap, Reid took an educated guess. “Is it about 15?” she speculated. However, it didn’t take long for Shephard—who now co-hosts This Morning—to catch wind of the incorrect figure and demand a correction.
Midway through the show, Reid interrupted proceedings with an update straight from Shephard himself. Reading his message aloud, she announced, “Ben Shephard has got in touch.” She then quoted his response:
“I expect a correction. I play golf off seven, not 15—which has taken a lot of pain and tears and swearing. I am fuming downstairs,” Shephard wrote.
The moment prompted laughter from those in the studio, including guest Lorraine Kelly, who was sitting on the GMB couch discussing her own upcoming programme. Amused by Shephard’s reaction, Kelly asked, “Was that when you were talking to Anton Du Beke?”
Richard Madeley responded in jest, “Yes. Don’t sue us.”
Reid, embracing the humor of the situation, added, “We impugned his golf handicap, didn’t we? The record is corrected—don’t sue us, Ben Shephard.”
Ben Shephard’s Move to This Morning
Shephard, who previously shared hosting duties on Good Morning Britain alongside Reid and Kate Garraway, made the transition to This Morning last year. He now presents the popular daytime show alongside Cat Deeley, following the departure of long-time hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.
Despite moving on from Good Morning Britain, Shephard’s relationship with his former colleagues remains strong—as demonstrated by his swift response to Reid’s lighthearted mistake.
Anton Du Beke Addresses Giovanni Pernice Controversy
While the golf blunder stole the spotlight, the episode also featured a conversation with Anton Du Beke, who was on the show to promote his new podcast. However, the discussion soon shifted toward Strictly Come Dancing and the speculation surrounding Giovanni Pernice’s potential return to the show.
Richard Madeley wasted no time addressing the topic, questioning Anton directly about his stance on Giovanni’s future with Strictly.
“It’s been reported that you personally would welcome Giovanni Pernice back onto Strictly,” Madeley probed. “We know that the BBC upheld six bullying complaints against him, didn’t uphold others, but you would welcome him back. That’s sticking your head above the parapet. Why would you do that?”
Du Beke, known for his polished responses, acknowledged the question but quickly diverted the conversation.
“That’s a very good question,” he said, before steering the focus back to a more neutral topic. “I’d prefer to be talking about the golf. I was delighted for Giovanni this autumn because he went over to Italy and did Strictly Come Dancing there and he won with the brilliant Bianca [actress Bianca Guaccero].”
He continued, highlighting his excitement about his upcoming tour with Pernice.
“He was delighted to win that, and we’re going off on tour this summer, so I’ll be seeing him when we go back out on the road,” Anton explained. “I love being on stage with him and performing with him, and I’ve known him a long time. We’ve got a wonderful company as well, so all in all, it’s a great show.”
A Morning of Lighthearted Corrections and Strictly Speculation
Between Shephard’s golf-related outburst and Anton Du Beke’s diplomatic handling of Strictly speculation, it was a lively morning on Good Morning Britain. The show balanced humor with celebrity insight, proving once again why it remains a staple of British morning television.
For Shephard, the incident served as a reminder that even the smallest details matter—especially when it comes to one’s golf handicap. And for Anton Du Beke, it was yet another example of how gracefully he navigates Strictly Come Dancing controversies.
With lively debates, spontaneous corrections, and playful banter, Good Morning Britain continues to entertain viewers with its mix of news and entertainment. And one thing is for sure—Ben Shephard won’t be letting anyone forget his golf handicap anytime soon.
