ITV Good Morning Britain’s Rob Rinder quizzes Captain Tom’s daughter on ‘the truth’

Good Morning Britain (GMB) presenter Robert Rinder demanded answers from Hannah Ingram-Moore,

daughter of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore, during a tense and emotional interview on March 7.

This was Hannah’s first public appearance since the Charity Commission’s damning report accused her of personally benefiting from the Captain Tom Foundation.

The report also highlighted how she and her husband, Colin Ingram-Moore, had profited from their roles as directors of the charity.

Captain Tom, who captured the hearts of the nation with his fundraising walks during the COVID-19 pandemic,

raised nearly £40 million for the NHS and was knighted for his remarkable contributions.

However, his daughter and the foundation have come under scrutiny after the Charity Commission’s findings revealed financial mismanagement, including failing to fulfill promises to donate proceeds from Captain Tom’s books to charitable causes.

Tough Questions and Emotional Moments

The interview began with an emotional moment where Hannah opened up about her personal losses. “Of course, my mother died a long, slow death of dementia, and that’s why my father came to live with us… He died in a very public way,” she shared. She reflected on the immense grief her family endured, particularly after the public nature of her father’s death. “People weren’t able to discuss loss. The headlines were very negative, and we lost control of any sense of the truth,” she said, adding that she had to bury her grief while dealing with the pressures of the public eye.

However, the tone quickly shifted as Rob Rinder began to question her about the controversial financial dealings surrounding her father’s books. Rinder pressed her about the books’ proceeds, suggesting that she may have been involved in securing the book deal for Captain Tom. Hannah denied any wrongdoing, stating that her father personally signed the book deal with the help of an agent. “There was never a contract with the charity,” she clarified. “He lived with us. We didn’t think of him as a diminished man. He was paid that money, and he decided where it went. Not a penny was received by him and us when those books went on sale.”

Hannah continued to assert that none of the money from the books benefited her or the charity, adding, “Charity money didn’t pay for the building or the hot tub.” Despite her reassurances, Rob Rinder was not satisfied with her explanations. He pressed her further, reminding her that she had previously admitted to losing control of the situation. “You said you lost grip of the truth. You lost control of it. So, I am asking you for the truth here,” he demanded.

Lack of Regret and Further Scrutiny

Throughout the interview, Rinder seemed frustrated by Hannah’s responses, noting that she appeared to lack genuine remorse for the damage caused by the charity’s mismanagement. At one point, Rinder pointed out her seeming absence of regret, to which she responded, “What I can’t do is sit here and persuade everyone to believe our reality.”

Hannah also opened up about her regret over establishing the Captain Tom Foundation in the first place. In a heartfelt admission, she said, “It didn’t need to be set up as a charity. We could have continued that legacy without it, because what it’s done is all but completely derailed our lives. It was set up with my father’s name, and that is our deepest regret.” Despite her emotional response, her attempts to explain the charity’s actions did little to quell public anger over the situation.

When pressed about the transparency of the charity’s dealings, Hannah claimed that there was no dishonesty in the process. She acknowledged that the book sales were intended to support the foundation but insisted that no specific monetary amount was ever promised. “There is nothing dishonest about what happened,” she said. “The book said it would support the launch [of the foundation], and it did. I’m sorry [the public] feel misled, I genuinely am, but there was never any intent to mislead. If there was any misleading, it wasn’t our doing.”

A Legacy Under Fire

The interview between Hannah and Rob Rinder highlighted the deepening controversy surrounding the Captain Tom Foundation and its financial handling. While Hannah maintained that there was no malicious intent, the Charity Commission’s findings, along with public outcry, have cast a shadow over her father’s legacy. As the story continues to unfold, the public remains divided on the integrity of the foundation’s operations and the Ingram-Moore family’s role in managing it.

With Good Morning Britain presenting this intense grilling and further interviews on the horizon, it’s clear that the debate surrounding the Captain Tom Foundation and its leaders will not be settling anytime soon. Whether the family can rebuild trust with the public remains uncertain, as their actions continue to be scrutinized by the media and the public alike.
