Jason Derulo says breaking his neck early in his career was ‘one of the darkest times of his life’ as he details suffering a ‘hangman’s break’

Jason Derulo has opened up about one of the darkest moments in his life—his neck injury in 2013

which forced him to cancel his much-anticipated *Future History World Tour*.

In a recent interview on the *Great Company Podcast* with Jamie Laing, Derulo reflected on the life-changing incident

that left him with a serious injury and uncertain about his future in music.

The 35-year-old singer was preparing for his tour when the accident occurred.

While rehearsing a back tuck dance move to improve his stamina, Derulo slipped and landed on his head.

The fall resulted in a severe injury—a “hangman’s break,” a type of neck fracture typically seen in cases of hanging. This break affected a vertebra in his spine, leaving Derulo with no choice but to cancel his entire tour and take an extended break from his career.

Recalling the moment of the accident, Derulo described how he heard a loud crack when he hit the ground. “I felt a huge heat in my neck, and I was just thinking in my head like, damn, what just happened? Did my life just end?” he shared. At the time, Derulo was only 24 years old, and he had been driven to perfection in his performances. He explained that, despite slipping during rehearsals, the protocol was to continue the move, but he had bailed, leading to the disastrous fall.

The pain from the injury was excruciating, and Derulo, who was with his mother at the time, struggled to hide the severity of his condition. His mother drove him to the hospital, and every bump in the road felt like “hell on earth.” After undergoing X-rays, doctors informed him of the seriousness of his injury and told him he would be out of commission for at least seven months, forcing him to cancel his highly anticipated tour.

At that point in his career, Derulo was still in the early stages of his success. His second album had seen some success, with hits like “Don’t Want to Go Home” and “It Girl,” but nothing to the extent of his later achievements. The thought of taking an extended break from his career was daunting. He was unsure of how his career would progress or if this injury marked the end of his music journey. “I didn’t know what the rest of my life was gonna look like. I didn’t know whether I could take that kind of time off,” Derulo admitted.

However, Derulo used the time away from the stage as an opportunity for growth. He created a strict routine to keep himself motivated and focused during the seven months of recovery. He would start each day with a 40-minute walk on the treadmill and then spend up to 12 hours working in the studio. This dedication to his craft ultimately paid off, as Derulo wrote some of his most successful tracks during this period, including those from his *Talk Dirty* album.

Derulo’s perseverance and hard work during his recovery period led to the creation of his most successful album to date. *Talk Dirty* featured multiple platinum singles and solidified his place in the music industry. Looking back, Derulo acknowledges that the time he spent recovering was crucial to his artistic development. “And that’s when I made my most successful album, which had six platinum songs on it,” he said.

Though the injury was life-threatening and the emotional toll was significant, Derulo’s resilience turned a period of hardship into one of the most successful phases of his career. He even expressed his gratitude to his fans, stating that the support they showed during his recovery played a significant role in his healing process. “The pain of letting you down cuts me way deeper than this injury I’ve sustained,” Derulo wrote in a statement to his fans when he canceled his tour. “My fans mean everything to me, so I’m praying for a speedy recovery in order to perform for you in the near future.”

Jason Derulo’s story is a testament to his resilience and the power of perseverance. What could have been a career-ending moment turned into a catalyst for some of his biggest achievements. As he continues to perform and create new music, the memory of that dark period in his life serves as a reminder of his strength and determination.
