Jenna Bush Hager Reflects on the ‘Double-Edged Sword’ of Being a ‘Nepo Baby’
Jenna Bush Hager has lived much of her life in the public eye, growing up as the daughter and granddaughter of two U.S. presidents.
Despite the privilege and opportunities that come with such a high-profile background,
the Today with Jenna & Friends host recently opened up about the challenges of being labeled a “nepo baby.”
During the Wednesday, February 19, broadcast of her show,
Bush Hager discussed how coming from a prominent political family has influenced her personal and professional journey.
While she acknowledges the advantages her background has afforded her, she also pointed out the pressures and scrutiny that come with it.
Navigating Life as a ‘Nepo Baby’
Bush Hager and her twin sister, Barbara Pierce Bush, have spent the majority of their lives in the public eye. Their grandfather, George H.W. Bush, served as the 41st president of the United States from 1989 to 1993, while their father, George W. Bush, held the same office from 2001 to 2009. By the time their father was sworn in as president, the sisters were 20 years old, making them well-acquainted with the challenges of growing up under public scrutiny.
Reflecting on the term “nepo baby,” a phrase often used to describe individuals who benefit from their family’s fame or status, Bush Hager admitted that it’s a label her own children have jokingly brought up.
“Sometimes my children say ‘nepo babies’ and I’m like, ‘I mean, I kind of am one, kids,'” she shared with her audience.
However, she also emphasized that while being part of a well-known family can open doors, it comes with its own set of difficulties.
The Burden of Expectations
Bush Hager spoke candidly about the high expectations that come with having a famous last name, noting that public perception can sometimes be harsh.
“I also think it’s hard. People want [nepo babies] to fail,” she explained.
She and her sister, Barbara, have always been driven to work hard, a mindset she attributes to wanting to prove themselves beyond their family name.
“Barbara and I are serious workaholics and I’ve tried to figure out why, and I think it’s because we want to prove to people that it isn’t always easy,” she said.
Bush Hager’s co-host, Justin Sylvester, supported her perspective, suggesting that those with well-known parents often have to “work twice as hard” to establish their credibility and earn respect.
Though she takes pride in her accomplishments and her work ethic, Bush Hager also acknowledged the need for balance.
“I’m glad I work really hard and I’m glad I have the family that I have,” she said. “But I also need to, at some point, be like, ‘Okay, I did it. I proved it.’ And I can also be happy with my kids at home.”
She summed up her experience as a “double-edged sword,” recognizing both the advantages and the burdens that come with her lineage.
A Career Built on Hard Work and Passion
Despite the assumptions some may have about her success, Bush Hager has built an impressive career on her own terms. Beyond her well-known role on the Today show, she has worked as a teacher and authored several children’s books.
When she was first approached with the opportunity to join Today as a correspondent, Bush Hager was hesitant about taking the job. However, it was her grandparents who encouraged her to take the leap.
“That’s kind of what our family has given us,” she previously told PEOPLE. “They have allowed us to take risks and hope that everything works the way we want it to.”
Her career path reflects a blend of personal ambition and the values instilled in her by her family. Over the years, she has built a name for herself beyond politics, earning respect for her contributions to media, literature, and education.
Embracing Both Sides of the Coin
While the “nepo baby” debate continues to be a topic of discussion in entertainment, politics, and other industries, Bush Hager’s perspective highlights the complexities of growing up in a famous family.
Rather than dismissing the label, she embraces it with honesty, recognizing both the privileges and the challenges that come with her background. Through hard work, determination, and a desire to carve her own path, Jenna Bush Hager continues to prove that success is not just about where you come from, but what you do with the opportunities presented to you.
