Jennifer Lawrence opened up about her guilt after becoming a mother again, having experienced a miscarriage

Jennifer Lawrence welcomed her first child with her husband Cooke Maroney in February 2022.

Since welcoming her son, Cy, the Oscar-winning actress has been refreshingly honest about the struggles of motherhood as a working actress.

The Silver Linings Playbook star referred to starting a family with her husband as “the scariest thing in the entire world,”

as she often asked herself, “What if I f*** up? What if I can’t do it?”

Jennifer Lawrence described the morning after she gave birth to her son, Cy, as if her “whole life had started over.”

“My heart has stretched to a capacity that I didn’t know about,” she revealed. “I include my husband in that. And then they’re both just, like, out there – walking around, crossing streets.

He’s gonna drive one day. He’s gonna be a stupid teenager and be behind the wheel of a car. And I’m just gonna be like, ‘Good night!’ You know? Like, who sleeps?”

During an Actors on Actors interview with Viola Davis, Jennifer Lawrence opened up about her guilt after becoming a mother.

“Every day of being a mom, I feel awful. I feel guilty.”

Lawrence expressed, “I’m playing with him and I’m like, ‘Is this what he wants to be doing? Should we be outside? We’re outside. What if he’s cold? What if he’s going to get sick? Should we be inside? Is this enough? Is this developing your brain enough?’”

However, Viola assured the actress that every mother makes mistakes, including the time when she locked her own child in the car during the “sweltering” heat.

Lawrence told E! News while promoting No HardFeelings that what type of roles she was interested in hadn’t changed, but her main priority would be her son. She admitted before taking on a project she would consider where, when and for how long she would be away from her son.

“Fortunately,” she told Cameron Diaz for an Interview magazine chat that “my husband is the greatest father in the entire world, so when I’m working, I don’t have any more guilt than the usual every day, all-day parent guilt.”

Jennifer Lawrence’s Complicated Road To Motherhood

In 2017, Jennifer Lawrence admitted that her desire to be a mother actually decreased with age. In her early 20s, she couldn’t wait to have children, but this changed with age.

Lawrence met Cooke Maroney, an art gallery director, in 2018 through a mutual friend, and he changed her outlook on parenthood and marriage. “I definitely wasn’t at a place where I was like ‘I’m ready to get married,'” the American Hustle star explained on NAKED With Catt Sadler in 2019. “I just met Cooke, and I wanted to marry him. We wanted to marry each other. We wanted to commit fully. And, you know, he’s my best friend. I feel very honored to become a Maroney.”

“He’s just the best person I’ve ever met in my whole life,” Lawrence gushed to Entertainment Tonight about her then-fiancé, and agreeing to marry him was “a very, very easy decision.” The pair wed in the fall of 2019 in a Rhode Island ceremony.

In 2015 Vogue interview, Jennifer Lawrence’s outlook on love and marriage was shared. “I feel like if I find that one person who I want to spend the rest of my life with, who I want to be the father of my children, that I would absolutely not f*** it up,” she explained to the outlet “But I’m also not banking on that.”

In a recent Vogue article, the actress opened up about the two miscarriages she suffered in her life. Jennifer talked about the impact of the Roe v. Wade ruling in the US while also remembering her own experiences with pregnancy loss. She revealed that in her early 20s she had been intending to get an abortion, but “I had a miscarriage alone in Montreal.” The actress also revealed that before she fell pregnant with her son Cy she suffered a second miscarriage while filming Don’t Look Up.

“I remember a million times thinking about it while I was pregnant,” she explained to Vogue. “Thinking about the things that were happening to my body. And I had a great pregnancy. I had a very fortunate pregnancy. But every single second of my life was different. And it would occur to me sometimes: What if I was forced to do this?”

Why Jennifer Lawrence Wants To Keep Her Family Life Private

Jennifer Lawrence admitted it was scary to talk about motherhood, but she still tries to be open about it. “Only because it’s so different for everybody. If I say, It was amazing from the start, some people will think, ‘It wasn’t amazing for me at first’, and feel bad.”

She admits that her friends have helped her feel better about her parenting struggles. “Fortunately, I have so many girlfriends who were honest, who were like, ‘It’s scary. You might not connect right away. You might not fall in love right away.’ So I felt so prepared to be forgiving.”

When she returned to the spotlight after the global pandemic and a planned break from the industry, Jennifer Lawrence felt self-conscious about becoming a mother.

“I haven’t spoken to the world in forever,” she explained to Vanity Fair at the time. “And to come back now, when I have all of these new accessories added to my life that I obviously want to protect…I’m nervous for you. I’m nervous for me. I’m nervous for the readers!”

Jennifer Lawrence didn’t want to not talk about her new addition to her family “but every instinct in my body wants to protect their privacy for the rest of their lives, as much as I can,” she admitted. “I don’t want anyone to feel welcome into their existence. And I feel like that just starts with not including them in this part of my work.”
