With her role as Mystique being one of the most iconic performances of her career, Jennifer Lawrence turned the character from a tertiary villain in the series to an iconic figure with depth.
Lawrence has become one of the most prominent actors in Disney-Fox’s movies, but it didn’t come without some ups and downs.
Lawrence’s tenure as the blue mutant was a bumpy road, as she had continuously held nothing back when complaining to the press about her blue suit,
and was often reluctant to return after each movie had wrapped up production. However, the actress has now starred in four of the movies, and each shoot comes with a ton of crazy stories.
When in the makeup chair for First Class, Business Insider revealed that Lawrence had to wait for a whole eight hours while blue paint was applied to every single part of her body.
Not only that, but it took six make-up artists to apply it.
And calling it a makeup chair is putting it nicely, as a period of the application required Lawrence to sit on a bicycle so the makeup artists could get to the harder parts of her body.
The production of First Class proved difficult for Lawrence due to the literal extreme lengths of being painted blue for the role, and though the paint was traded in for a costume in the follow-up movies, it caused a lot of problems for the actress outside of the production, too.
As she was renting an apartment in London during production, she had turned the bath completely blue after washing the paint off. Lawrence told Rolling Stone that she almost got into fisticuffs with the landlord when it came to getting back her security deposit.
There were a lot of things the Fox movies did wrong, and some of the choices were so bizarre that this idea wouldn’t actually be that surprising.
During the production of Days of Future Past, according to Useless Daily, Stewart made a joke to director Bryan Singer that he wanted to play Mystique, as he was open to the idea of being painted blue and being naked on-screen. He claimed that it was what the fans wanted. Given Lawrence’s sense of humor, it’s doubtful she’d be opposed to the idea.
While fans discuss how Marvel could fix the X-Men franchise, the questionable decisions made by execs shouldn’t fall on the shoulders of the actors. Many of the cast involved in the mutant movies, such as Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen, had all heavily researched the characters, and it’s easy for fans to believe that Lawrence wouldn’t put in the work, given her reported attitude to the series.
However, as discovered by ScienceFiction.com, that rumor was put to rest, as she can be heard in a behind the scenes extra on the Apocalypse gag-reel making a reference to Nightcrawler, who is Mystique’s son in the comics.
One of the interesting facts about the character of Mystique is that she is compromised when she is in disguise, meaning that because she is putting all her focus and energy into maintaining the person she is replicating, she struggles to do much else. This means that when Lawrence is on screen and not in makeup (which is most of the time in Apocalypse), she shouldn’t be as clear-minded as she is.
But this is one of those classic tales of the actor having control over their appearance, as it was no secret that Lawrence hated the costume she had to wear. However, she can’t be blamed as according to the Toronto Sun, the costume she wore for Days of Future Past and Apocalypse required her to urinate through a funnel.
With Days of Future Past being one of the best Fox movies, a lot of credit is owed to Mystique having more involvement. Jennifer Lawrence is arguably the most famous actress in the world right now, not only due to X-Men, but thanks to leading another billion-dollar franchise, The Hunger Games, and starring in Oscar-winning David O. Russell movies, so it’s hard to believe she wasn’t top-billed for any of the movies before Apocalypse.
According to BI, Lawrence was supposed to be top-billed for Days Of Future Past, but with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reprising their roles, the actress was edged out.
There were many reasons that Lawrence hated being painted blue, and in later movies putting on the suit, not only because it was a struggle to wash off and that it took a lifetime in the makeup chair, but also because she was worried about the toxins she was inhaling, she told Entertainment Weekly.
As her entire face had to be painted blue without a speck of skin uncovered, even the inside of her nostrils had to be painted, which gave her headaches while shooting.
Upon completing the production of Apocalypse, it looked unlikely that Lawrence would ever reprise the role, especially as she was clearly so happy to be done with the series.
However, Heroic Hollywood confirmed that she convinced herself to return for Dark Phoenix after thinking that her story hadn’t been wrapped up. She felt like she owed it to the fans to give Mystique the send off the character deserved.
With each consecutive X-Men movie that Lawrence starred in, she wore the blue suit less and less, which is one of the 20 things wrong with the X-men movies we all chose to ignore. The actress had appeared on the poster for First Class and Days of Future Past as Mystique in her real, blue form, but on the poster of Apocalypse, she appears looking more like Jennifer Lawrence than in any other movie, almost as if Mystique adopted the form of the real-life Lawrence.
According to Forbes, this is because the actress had become so world-famous that her image on the poster would have attracted thousands of more ticket buyers than it would have if she appeared unnoticeable in her blue outfit.
Jennifer Lawrence was an important part of resurrecting the X-Men series, as First Class was coming off the heels of the dreadful X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Lawrence brought depth to a character who was essentially a hench-woman in the original movies.
So it was only right that the cast gave the actor the send-off she deserved, and the whole cast and crew gave her a standing ovation after she wrapped her last scene, according to ET Online. They all went to dinner in celebration of the effort she put into the role over the past eight years.
