Longtime MSNBC anchor Joy Reid became emotional as she opened up about her feelings following the network’s decision to cancel The Reid Out,
marking a major shift in the channel’s programming lineup.
Speaking in a candid Zoom interview, Reid expressed a mix of emotions ranging from anger and disappointment to gratitude,
while also reaffirming her commitment to the progressive issues she covered on her show.
Reid’s Emotional Response to MSNBC Cancellation
The 56-year-old journalist couldn’t hold back tears as she reflected on MSNBC’s decision to axe her 7 p.m. show, which had been a fixture on the network since 2020.
While speaking with the Win With Black Women podcast, she admitted feeling “anger, rage, disappointment, and guilt” over the impact the cancellation would have on her team.
“I’ve been through every emotion… anger, rage, disappointment, hurt… guilt,” she confessed. “You know, (a feeling) that I let my team lose their jobs.”
Despite the overwhelming emotions, Reid ultimately landed on a feeling of appreciation. “But in the end, where I really land… is just gratitude. Just pure gratitude and gratitude,” she added. “Not just because people would take the time to get on a call like this or to take care of me. But also that my show had value.”
Standing by Her Progressive Reporting
Reid also took a moment to reflect on the topics she covered on The Reid Out, making it clear that she had no regrets about using her platform to address progressive issues, even if it led to controversy.
“I am not sorry,” she declared as she broke down in tears. “I am not sorry that I stood up for those things because those things are of God.”
Throughout her time on MSNBC, Reid became known for her strong stance on racial justice, immigration, and foreign policy. She didn’t hold back when discussing Black Lives Matter, the war in Gaza, and the policies of former President Donald Trump.
“Whether it’s talking about any of these issues and, yes, whether it’s talking about Gaza and the fact that we as the American people have a right to object, to have a right to object to little babies being bombed,” Reid said passionately.
Her fearless approach to reporting often sparked debate, but she remained committed to amplifying the voices of marginalized communities.
MSNBC’s Programming Shake-Up
The cancellation of The Reid Out is part of a broader restructuring at MSNBC, which is making significant changes to its programming under the new presidential administration. The network announced that weekend anchors Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez would take over the 7 p.m. time slot previously held by Reid.
MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler commented on the transition, stating that the network was waiting for Reid’s response regarding how she would like to handle her departure. “We are waiting to get a response from Joy and her team about how she would like to handle that, and we want to defer to her on that,” Kutler said. “The hope is that we will have a final show with Joy.”
While MSNBC has not publicly detailed the reasons for Reid’s departure, media insiders speculate that the shift in political climate and a desire to appeal to a broader audience may have played a role.
Lester Holt Also Steps Down from NBC Nightly News
Reid’s departure isn’t the only major shake-up at NBC. Veteran anchor Lester Holt announced he would be stepping down from his position as the host of NBC Nightly News after a decade in the role.
In a memo to staff, Holt, 65, shared his decision to transition into a full-time role with Dateline, a program he has long been associated with.
“It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to work with each of you every day, keeping journalism as our true north and our viewers at the center of everything we do,” Holt wrote. “A smile comes to my face when I think that with Nightly News and Dateline, I have now anchored two of the most successful and iconic television news programs in broadcast history.”
Holt’s move is expected to take place over the summer, and NBC has yet to announce who will take over his position on Nightly News.
What’s Next for Joy Reid?
As Reid prepares to say goodbye to her MSNBC platform, she has not yet revealed what her next career move will be. However, given her passionate commitment to journalism and advocacy, it’s likely she will continue to be a prominent voice in the media landscape.
Despite the emotions surrounding her departure, Reid remains firm in her convictions. Her final words on the matter emphasized her unwavering dedication to reporting on issues she believes in.
As the dust settles from MSNBC’s shake-up, fans of Reid are eager to see where she will land next—and whether she will bring her fiery brand of journalism to another network or platform.
