Kate Walsh opens up on fear she felt when she was diagnosed with brain tumor

Kate Walsh, widely recognized for her role in Grey’s Anatomy,

recently revisited a life-changing health scare during her appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

The 57-year-old actress reflected on the moment she discovered she had a brain tumor in 2015

and how the experience reshaped her approach to personal health and self-advocacy.

A Shocking Diagnosis

During her conversation on the show, Walsh revealed that she was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor nearly a decade ago.

While the tumor was noncancerous, the discovery was still a terrifying moment for the actress.

“Thankfully, it turned out to be benign, so I was very, very fortunate,” Walsh shared. Despite the relief of a non-malignant diagnosis, the journey leading up to it was anything but simple.

She went on to describe the subtle warning signs she experienced before finally seeking medical attention.

The Symptoms That Raised Concern

Walsh’s symptoms were not immediately alarming, making it difficult to recognize that something was seriously wrong. Initially, she chalked up her fatigue and lack of focus to everyday stressors.

“It was like, ‘Hey, I’m really tired,’” she recalled. “And then it’s like, ‘Oh, the right side of my body is dipping.’”

She also noticed other small yet unusual changes in her daily life, such as difficulty walking her dog.

“They’re like, ‘Oh, you’re off.’ I’m like, ‘No,’” she said of how people around her dismissed her concerns. “And then, walking the dog, I’m like, ‘It must be a little bit of a windy street.’”

Walsh admitted that she initially tried to justify the symptoms, attributing them to things like attention deficit issues or spending too much time on her phone. However, deep down, she had a feeling something was truly wrong.

Fighting for Her Health

Despite the doubts of others, Walsh ultimately listened to her instincts and pushed for further medical evaluation. Her persistence proved crucial, as doctors eventually discovered the tumor in her left frontal lobe.

“I know how important it is to advocate for one’s own health because people were like, ‘You’re just depressed,’” she said, noting that her TV show Bad Judge had been canceled around the same time.

“People told me, ‘Your show got canceled. You’re just depressed.’ I’m like, ‘No, something’s off.’”

This isn’t the first time Walsh has spoken about her diagnosis. In a 2017 interview, she recalled the moment she received the news and how she had to push for further medical testing.

“I really pushed to see a neurologist. I just had an instinct,” she revealed. “I had to really advocate because they don’t hand out MRIs so easily. But I got an MRI, and thank God I did, because it turned out I had a very sizable brain tumor in my left frontal lobe.”

A Life-Changing Moment

When doctors confirmed her diagnosis, Walsh described the experience as surreal.

“I just left my body,” she recalled. “My assistant had driven me there, and I had to go get him so that he could take notes because I was gone. It was never anything I would have imagined.”

Three days after the diagnosis, Walsh underwent surgery to remove the tumor. Fortunately, the procedure was successful, and the tumor was later identified as a benign meningioma.

Spreading Awareness and Encouraging Advocacy

Since her recovery, Walsh has been vocal about her experience, emphasizing the importance of listening to one’s body and pushing for medical attention when something feels off. She hopes that by sharing her story, she can encourage others to be proactive about their health.

Her message is clear: even when symptoms seem minor, they should not be ignored. Sometimes, it takes persistence and self-advocacy to get the answers needed for proper medical care.

Walsh’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that prioritizing health, seeking medical advice, and trusting personal instincts can make all the difference in catching and treating health issues early.
