Kelly Ripa Calls Out Mark Consuelos for ‘Drifting Off’ on Live TV
Mark Consuelos might think he can get away with zoning out, but Kelly Ripa isn’t letting it slide!
The married co-hosts of Live with Kelly and Mark shared a hilarious on-air moment when Ripa caught Consuelos seemingly lost in thought during their February 21 episode.
The moment happened as Consuelos was reading an article from the New York Post, citing an interview with Dr. Stuart Hameroff, an anesthesiologist and professor.
The article discussed a fascinating study about brain activity at the end of life, suggesting it could be linked to the soul leaving the body.
Reading aloud, Consuelos said, “A spike in end-of-life brain activity could be evidence of the soul leaving the body, experts say.”
He went on to elaborate, describing how researchers detected a “burst of activity called gamma synchrony—a type of brain wave pattern linked to conscious thought, awareness, and perception—sometimes lasting 30 to 90 seconds before disappearing when the patient is already clinically dead.”
Both Ripa and Consuelos were intrigued by the study, and Ripa quickly related it to a recent personal experience. She recalled how their beloved dog, Chewie, who had passed away earlier in the month at age 17, exhibited a similar burst of energy just before taking her final breath.
“Right before Chewie took her final breath, she got, like, a little burst of energy. Do you remember?” Ripa asked her husband. “And we were like, ‘Oh my gosh, everything’s going to be okay.’ For a moment, we really thought whatever she was going through was over, but then I think it was exactly that—a final burst of energy.”
As she spoke, she noticed Consuelos staring at her blankly, prompting her to ask, “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Consuelos, seemingly caught off guard, responded, “No, I just think it’s a cool concept.”
But Ripa wasn’t buying it. “I think you just drifted off and started thinking about something else,” she quipped. “I’ve been married to you long enough to know when you are not listening to me. You’ve moved on, and I’m trying to figure out what could possibly be more interesting in your head right now.”
Trying to defend himself, Consuelos joked that he was just thinking about his lunch order. However, Ripa wasn’t letting him off the hook that easily.
“Do you understand that I know him so well that I was like, ‘He’s not even listening!’” she exclaimed.
Though Consuelos attempted to insist he had been paying attention, Ripa fired back, “Then why did you have that weird look on your face?”
Their playful banter is nothing new to longtime Live viewers. Since Consuelos officially joined his wife as co-host in 2023, the couple has delighted audiences with their lighthearted teasing and real-life marriage moments.
Despite the moment of distraction, it’s clear that their chemistry remains one of the show’s biggest draws. Fans love watching the couple navigate the ups and downs of hosting together, proving that after nearly three decades of marriage, their dynamic is as entertaining as ever.
