Lady Gaga pokes fun at her 2013 performance with R. Kelly during ‘SNL’ monologue: That ‘aged amazingly’

Lady Gaga turned the spotlight on her past during her second appearance hosting Saturday Night Live (SNL), poking fun at her infamous 2013 duet performance with R. Kelly.

The moment became a humorous highlight of her monologue, where she reflected on how much the performance had “aged” over the years.

Gaga, who was not only the host but also the musical guest on Saturday night’s show, reminisced about her first time hosting SNL back in 2013.

She joked about the performance of “Do What U Want” with R. Kelly, which had been part of her appearance.

At the time, the collaboration seemed like just another high-profile moment in her career,

but the context has shifted dramatically since then. R. Kelly was later convicted of charges related to sex trafficking and racketeering,

which cast a long shadow over past collaborations like this one.

While standing on stage in a glittering flapper gown with matching fur, Gaga quipped, “I’m so happy to be back at ‘SNL.’ The last time I hosted was in 2013 and every aspect of my performance aged amazingly.” She then added with a laugh, “So there’s no need to Google ‘SNL 2013, Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly.’ I won’t bring it up, because that would be bad!” The crowd erupted in laughter as Gaga lightly acknowledged the awkwardness surrounding that moment in time.

Despite the potentially controversial nature of bringing up the performance, Gaga handled it with her characteristic humor, showing that she has always had a way of turning even uncomfortable moments into something to laugh about. The remark was a playful self-aware comment, allowing her to address the incident head-on while keeping the mood light-hearted.

The pop star didn’t shy away from discussing the evolution of her career since then, transitioning the conversation to her recent work in acting. Gaga reflected on her journey from pop sensation to critically acclaimed actress, particularly for her performances in A Star Is Born and House of Gucci. These roles have earned her widespread praise and solidified her as a versatile performer in Hollywood.

“Anyways, I’m an actor now,” she said with a smile. “And I’ve been very diligent about selecting films that can showcase my craft as a serious actor, films such as Joker 2.” The audience responded with a mixture of applause and laughter as Gaga continued to embrace the humor in her acting endeavors.

In another self-deprecating moment, she mentioned her and co-star Joaquin Phoenix’s nomination for a Razzie Award, which recognizes the worst in film. “Apparently people thought it was awesome,” she joked about the nomination. “Joaquin and I even got nominated for a Razzie, which is an award for the worst films of the year. We won for worst screen duo.”

However, Gaga wasn’t deterred by the nomination. Instead, she embraced it with her usual confidence and wit. “But joke’s on them,” she added with a grin, “I love winning things! And my Razzie brings me one step closer to an EGORT. It’s like an EGOT, but it’s hurtful.” The crowd appreciated her ability to turn the situation into a joke, proving once again that she can handle even the most awkward moments with grace and humor.

This appearance on SNL marked yet another moment of Gaga’s evolution in the public eye, not only as a performer but as someone who can reflect on her career with self-awareness and humor. Whether she’s singing her heart out on stage, starring in films, or cracking jokes about her past, Lady Gaga continues to captivate audiences with her authenticity and talent.
