LeBron James claims son Bronny won’t accept six-figure job from him

LeBron James, the NBA superstar widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, has opened up about his son, Bronny James,

and the young athlete’s approach to his own career. During an appearance on the *New Heights* podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce,

LeBron discussed his son’s ambitions and how he handles the pressures of being the son of one of the most iconic figures in sports history.

Bronny James, the 18-year-old guard, was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2024 NBA Draft as the 55th overall pick.

His selection marked a historic milestone, as he became part of the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA game.

While LeBron has been the face of the NBA for nearly two decades, Bronny’s journey into the professional ranks has been met with mixed opinions.

Despite the immense hype surrounding LeBron’s legacy, Bronny’s draft position in the second round left some basketball analysts questioning whether the Lakers made the right move. However, LeBron has consistently supported his son, emphasizing the importance of forging his own path.

In the podcast, LeBron revealed that despite the potential advantages of leveraging his family’s wealth and influence, Bronny has no interest in taking the easy route to success. LeBron shared that he offered Bronny the opportunity to take on a significant role in his business ventures, such as becoming the CEO of his company, but Bronny chose to focus on his own aspirations. “Bronny doesn’t have to play basketball at all,” LeBron explained. “It’s not like he needs the money. He can do whatever he wants to do. Like, if he wants to be the CEO of my company, he could be that. I’ll start teaching him right now to be that if he wants to.”

Despite these offers, Bronny has been resolute about following his dreams in basketball. LeBron emphasized that his son’s love for the game is what drives him, and he is determined to pursue his goals on his own terms. “This is my career. These are my goals and aspirations, and I want to play ball,” LeBron recounted Bronny’s words.

This strong-willed decision from Bronny highlights a key aspect of LeBron’s parenting philosophy: encouraging his children to carve out their own identities and pursue what truly excites them, rather than relying on the family’s established success. LeBron expressed his admiration for Bronny’s focus, noting that the young athlete’s sense of responsibility and maturity go beyond basketball. “He’s the best big brother his little brother or little sister could ever have,” LeBron said. “He’s just chill, easy, fun, and handles his business. He goes to work, he goes home, takes care of his boy, plays his video games, and reads a little bit.”

However, the journey has not been without its challenges. As LeBron pointed out, Bronny faces a unique set of pressures, having grown up under the shadow of his famous father. “I didn’t have to deal with the social media trolls growing up. I didn’t have to deal with my father being this ‘guy on the pedestal.’ Bronny has to deal with all of that,” LeBron admitted. Despite this, LeBron believes that dealing with such intense scrutiny will only serve to make Bronny stronger and more resilient in the long run.

LeBron also emphasized how people who underestimate or criticize Bronny would be surprised by his character. “If you ever meet Bronny, you’ll be like, ‘I’m such an idiot to look down on him or not want him to do great,’” LeBron said. He went on to praise Bronny for his calm demeanor and commitment to his own personal development, acknowledging the hardships his son has faced while striving to build his own career.

For Bronny, the pressure of living up to his father’s legacy is undeniable. However, LeBron’s unwavering support and his refusal to push his son into any particular path seems to have fostered a strong sense of self within Bronny. As the young player continues his journey in the NBA, splitting time between the Lakers and their G-League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, it is clear that Bronny is determined to make his own mark on the game.

LeBron’s comments on the *New Heights* podcast reflect his pride in Bronny’s independence and growth. While the NBA will undoubtedly continue to be a major part of their family’s story, it’s clear that both father and son are focused on forging their own legacies—one built on hard work, personal ambition, and a desire to make a name for themselves, separate from the shadows of fame.
