Little-known facts about Harry and Meghan’s beloved daughter Lilibet, who just turned three years old

Over the weekend, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hosted a cozy birthday party for their beloved daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor at their home in Montecito, California.

The party was attended by family, close friends and a few of Lilibet’s little friends.

Before Lilibet was born in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan decided to step back from their roles

as senior members of the British Royal Family and move to the United States to live with their first son, Prince Archie (5 years old).

An announcement from the Archewell Foundation said that Lilibet was named after Queen Elizabeth II,

while the middle name Diana was in memory of her late grandmother, Princess Diana. Prince Harry and Meghan often call their daughter by the affectionate nickname “Lili”.

In March 2023, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex began using royal titles for their children, announcing Lilibet’s christening. After King Charles III ascended the throne in September 2022, Archie and Lilibet were officially named Prince and Princess. The two babies’ new titles were updated on the official website of the British Royal Family, and appeared in the parents’ biographies on sussex.com – the official website of the couple Harry and Meghan launched in February. In line with British royal tradition, Harry and Meghan have adopted “Sussex” as the surname of their children.

In June last year, the Harry and Meghan family traveled to the UK to attend the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, on the occasion of Lilibet’s first birthday. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex held a small gathering at Frogmore Cottage – their residence in the UK until last year. Speaking about the birthday party, the spokesperson described it as an “intimate, casual barbecue”. On this occasion, the couple released the first portrait of Lilibet, taken by family friend Misan Harriman. The photo captures the moment Lilibet smiled brightly in a blue dress, her blonde hair tied with a white bow.

Fans continue to admire the lovely images of Lilibet in the documentary “Harry & Meghan” released on Netflix in December 2022. Since stepping down as senior members of the British Royal Family, Harry and Meghan have limited sharing images of their children in public. Princess Lilibet appeared for the first time in the family’s 2021 Christmas card with the caption: “This year, 2021, we are delighted to welcome our daughter Lilibet into the world. Archie has made us ‘Mum’ and ‘Dad’, and Lili has completed our family.”

Over the years, Harry and Meghan have occasionally shared details about their daughter in public, from her “very calm” personality to her determination to “keep up” with her older brother. On May 6, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrated Archie’s 5th birthday privately before embarking on a tour of Nigeria. This was their first overseas trip since stepping down as senior members of the British Royal Family.

Although Archie and Lilibet did not join the trip, the two babies were always in their parents’ minds. While visiting a school in Abuja, Meghan revealed that “singing and dancing” was Lilibet’s “favourite class”, presumably because “she loves to dance”. The Duchess of Sussex also shared that Archie is very interested in construction work, as shown by the brothers’ robotics projects in a STEM class.

At an event on women’s leadership on May 11, Meghan described the children as “very talkative and sweet children”. On Mother’s Day, May 12, she expressed that she “missed her children very much”. In his memoir “Spare” published in January 2023, Prince Harry recounted the moment Lilibet was born: “I put my hands under her little back and neck. Gently but firmly, like I’ve seen in the movies, I brought my precious daughter into this world, and held her for a while, trying to smile and look at her, but honestly, I couldn’t see anything. I wanted to say: Hello. I wanted to say: Where did you come from? I wanted to say: Is it better there? Is it peaceful? Are you scared? Don’t be scared, don’t be scared, everything will be okay. Daddy will protect you”.
