Michael Che Jokes He’s Next on the Chopping Block After Joy Reid Firing: ‘Only One More to Go, Baby’

Michael Che’s recent joke about potentially being next on the chopping block at NBC comes

after the unexpected cancellation of MSNBC’s The ReidOut, hosted by Joy Reid.

During a segment of Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update,” Che humorously suggested

that he might be the next target of the network’s shakeup, saying, “There’s only one more to go, baby,” referencing his own position at NBC.

This quip came amid a week of notable political events, including Trump and JD Vance’s controversial meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy,

and an AI-generated video of a “transformed Gaza” that sparked its own round of media attention.

However, Che’s comment about potentially losing his job stood out, as it came right after Reid’s show was canceled by the new president of MSNBC, Rebecca Kutler.

The cancellation of The ReidOut sent shockwaves through the network, creating tension among MSNBC’s staff. Reportedly, many employees were blindsided by the decision, having first heard the news through media reports rather than official communication from leadership. Staff members expressed frustration and disbelief at how the situation was handled. Some even demanded answers, questioning the rationale behind the decision to cancel the show and what it would mean for the future of the network.

Rachel Maddow, a prominent MSNBC host and Reid’s colleague, was vocal in expressing her concerns about the cancellation. She criticized the way the network had handled the situation, calling out the lack of transparency. Maddow added that the way staff was treated was “inefficient” and left employees feeling uncertain about the future. She also admitted that learning of Reid’s termination was “very, very hard to take,” highlighting the emotional toll the decision had on her and her colleagues.

Despite the tension, Che’s joke on SNL provided a lighthearted take on the situation, and it wasn’t the first time the Weekend Update duo had used humor to tackle a serious topic. The cancellation of Reid’s show is part of a larger wave of changes at MSNBC under Kutler’s leadership, which has seen multiple high-profile hosts and shows altered or removed.

The decision to cancel The ReidOut has been met with mixed reactions. While some see it as a necessary step for MSNBC to pivot toward a new direction and possibly recover from declining ratings, others view it as a troubling signal of silencing progressive voices. Reid, who was known for her strong critiques of former President Trump and her advocacy on issues like racial justice and immigration, had become a prominent voice in primetime television. Her sudden ouster has led many to question the network’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, especially in the context of the challenges faced by Black journalists in mainstream media.

For Che, whose role on SNL has also made him a well-known figure at NBC, the joke about being the “next to go” reflects the uncertainty that has gripped many within the network. With major programming shifts and growing dissatisfaction among staff, it’s clear that NBCUniversal is in the midst of a significant restructuring. Che’s comment was likely a way to bring attention to the larger question of how media companies balance business strategies with the treatment of their employees, particularly those who may not fit into the typical mold of mainstream television.

The fallout from Reid’s firing has left many wondering whether the changes at MSNBC signal a broader shift in how the network handles its talent, particularly those who have been outspoken on progressive issues. As the network continues to navigate its future direction, Che’s offhand remark on SNL could be seen as a reflection of the unease that currently exists behind the scenes at NBC and its affiliates.

For now, the uncertainty at MSNBC seems far from over, and the industry will be watching closely to see what other changes the network will implement as it tries to stay competitive in an ever-changing media landscape.
