Michael Strahan Defends Himself After National Anthem Controversy: ‘I Will Always Love the Military’

Michael Strahan recently addressed the controversy surrounding his decision not to place his hand over his heart during the national anthem at Fox’s Veteran’s Day tribute on Sunday,

November 10. The former NFL star and current television personality took to social media to clarify his stance and express his deep respect for the military,

aiming to put an end to speculation that he was making a political statement.

In a video shared on Instagram on Tuesday, November 12, Strahan directly responded to critics who accused him of protesting during the anthem.

He made it clear that there was no underlying agenda behind his actions.

“I didn’t have my hand over my chest, and everyone thought, ‘he’s protesting, he’s making a statement,’ which is so far from the truth. I have nothing to protest.

I have no statements to be made,” Strahan, 52, stated. “The only statement that should be made and that I want to make is that I love the military. I’ve always loved the military, and I will always love the military.”

He went on to explain that he had been caught up in the emotional moment, surrounded by young sailors at Naval Base San Diego during the Fox NFL Sunday tribute. In his excitement and admiration for the servicemen and women present, he unintentionally kept his hands at his side.

Strahan also took the opportunity to apologize if his actions unintentionally offended any members of the military. “If anyone was offended, I truly apologize. It was never my intention to show any form of disrespect,” he added.

Despite his heartfelt clarification, the incident had already sparked backlash, with some conservative commentators criticizing his perceived lack of patriotism. Newsmax host Todd Starnes took to social media, accusing Strahan of “disrespecting the military” and calling his behavior “not just repugnant, but downright cowardly.”

However, Strahan received strong support from colleagues and friends who vouched for his unwavering respect for the military. His Fox Sports co-host, Jay Glazer, came to his defense in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), emphasizing Strahan’s deep-rooted military appreciation.

“I’ve just seen the criticism of @michaelstrahan. Let me tell you this, I don’t know if I have a friend who is more proud of his military roots than Michael,” Glazer, 54, wrote. “He grew up on an army base, constantly talking about what he learned from his dad, Major Gene Strahan, and how his time there shaped him.”

Strahan has never shied away from sharing his admiration for the armed forces, particularly in honor of his father, Major Gene Strahan, who served in the U.S. Army for 23 years and was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He frequently pays tribute to his father and all service members, highlighting the sacrifices they make to protect the country.

On Veteran’s Day this year, Strahan once again honored military personnel, posting a heartfelt message on Instagram. “Thank you to all veterans and active service members who courageously risk their lives to protect us every day. Your selfless service is beyond measure,” he wrote. “Just as I honor my father, I keep all of you in my thoughts each and every day as we would not have the safety and freedoms we cherish without you. Thank you.”

Despite the initial controversy, Strahan’s words and actions continue to reinforce his genuine appreciation for the military. His explanation has resonated with many fans and colleagues who understand that his momentary lapse during the national anthem was in no way an act of protest. Instead, it was an unintentional oversight during an emotional tribute to the men and women who serve the nation.

As a beloved television personality and former sports icon, Strahan has long been respected for his authenticity and character. His response to this situation further solidifies his reputation as someone who deeply values and honors the sacrifices made by military personnel. Moving forward, Strahan remains committed to showing his support for veterans and active-duty members, ensuring that his respect and gratitude for their service are never in question.
